Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Three people were arrested in connection with the two-vehicle crash and gunfight that was reported on earlier this week. Horry County Police say two of the three men had an altercation at an apartment complex near Burcale Road. One man left, then waited outside for the others to exit the apartment complex, at which time a car pursuit ensued and shots were fired from both vehicles. The two cars crashed around 4 a.m. near Claypond Road. All three men have been charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a dangerous crime. (wpde.com) (WMBF)
  2. Travelers with invisible disabilities will now be able to identify themselves discreetly at Myrtle Beach International Airport. The airport launched a new initiative to help those with hidden disabilities. The program is called the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program. (WMBF) (Myrtle Beach International Airport via Facebook) (wpde.com)
  3. The Grand Strand's opioid crisis is getting some much-needed oversight from the city of Myrtle Beach's first Opioid Program Coordinator. Michelle Smith hails from Bethel, Connecticut and graduated from CCU. Smith worked for about ten years in the Horry County Solicitor's Intervention Programs before securing the brand-new position of Opioid Program Coordinator. She will be able to hire two assistant team members. (wpde.com)
  4. As temps get downright chilly, the last thing on most people's minds is beach shading devices. But the topic is getting some coverage in the news lately. Residents argue for alternative shading devices, citing the danger of umbrellas. Meanwhile, law enforcement strongly advises against alternative devices like the Shibumi Shade. The conversation is ongoing so it will be interesting to see what Grand Strand beach officials will come up with in the way of a solution. (WMBF)
  5. MBPD received two awards from the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives for using shell casings collected at crime scenes to help solve cases. The department is using a new technology called the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) to analyze bullet shell casings and solve crimes. Nearby law enforcement agencies can also use the technology — the system is being housed in Myrtle Beach. (WMBF) (Myrtle Beach Police Department via Facebook)

  • Patch Reader Zelda Nichols sent in this information about the Myrtle Beach Submarine Veterans Gift-a-Vet holiday campaign. I am happy to pass along the info for the group. "The Myrtle Beach Submarine Veterans Group has adopted Gift-a-Vet Foundation as their charity. Every year boxes are put in various restaurants and businesses on the Grand Strand similar to Toys For Tots in size. South Carolina has three homes for veterans: Wadesboro, Florence and Columbia, from all branches of the military. Many of these veterans have no family or friends so these items let them know we thank them for their service and they are not alone. Each home has hundreds of veterans. Some of these boxes can be found at: Veterans Café, Flapjacks Pancake House, Dead Dog Saloon, Beaver Bar and Applewood's Pancake House. We are looking for items for Christmas gifts. These vets are elderly, so books and puzzles with large print and pieces, hats, scarves, gloves, warm slippers, crossword puzzle books, paint sets are a few suggestions. Lists of additional items can be found on the boxes. Please do not donate used items. We want to thank all restaurants and businesses supporting Gift-a-Vet for their generosity and time. Unfortunately there are too many to list all of them here." (Gift-a-Vet)
  • Myrtle Beach Pelicans: Take advantage of this Black Friday Sale featuring an exclusive combo pack! For $375 you get: 25 ticket vouchers, $25 Splash cash (ballpark money), and 25% off in the Pro Shop (discount valid 2/1/23 - 9/30/23)." (Myrtle Beach Pelicans via Facebook)
  • Myrtle Beach SkyWheel will be a platinum sponsor for Winter Wonderland at the Beach. The SkyWheel says checking out the Winter Wonderland lighting displays from atop the wheel just may be the best seat in town for viewing! The fully-enclosed gondolas keep riders warm, besides. SkyWheel is also holding Breakfast With Santa at SkyWheel on November 26 and December 10. [Info obtained from MBACC press release.] (Myrtle Beach SkyWheel)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
