Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. A Conway man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder in the Christmas Eve shooting in the rear parking area of Thee Dollhouse strip club in Atlantic Beach. Surveillance footage helped the police identify the suspect. The shooting victim was brought to the hospital and surgery was performed on that person. The suspect is being held at Long Detention Center without bond. (WBTW)
  2. South Carolina airports set a new record in 2021 for the number of firearms found in carry-on luggage during TSA screenings. Myrtle Beach International Airport reported 13 firearms discovered at MYR during routine TSA screening. Discovery of firearms is evaluated by TSA on a case-by-case basis as far as criminal citations and fines are concerned. Firearms are not allowed in carry-on baggage, but they can be transported on commercial flights in checked baggage with very specific rules and regulations. (Myhorrynews)
  3. The airport also set another record in 2021: over 3 million passengers traveled through Myrtle Beach International Airport. The record breaks the previous record set in 2019. The success of the airport and the tourism in the community is seen as a "significant recovery" after the crushing blow dealt by the pandemic in 2020. The 2021 MYR airport traffic was 188% higher than in 2020! (WPDE)
  4. A new Chick-fil-A restaurant is opening in Myrtle Beach near the Myrtle Beach Mall at the intersection of Highways 17 and 22. The eatery's grand opening will be Thursday, January 20th. Usually, the chain gives a "First 100" prize package at grand openings, but for this location the restaurant has selected 100 local heroes who will receive free Chick-fil-A for a year! The company is also making a $25,000 donation to a Grand Strand food bank. (WMBF)
  5. There is little information available, but Myrtle Beach Fire Captain Jonathan Evans reported that one person was hospitalized after a possible drowning at Captain's Quarters Resort on the 900 block of South Ocean Boulevard on Monday night. (WBTW)

Today in Myrtle Beach:

  • Job Fair (Part of Myrtle Beach MLK Freedom Week) @ HGTC Business Center (10:00 AM)
  • Beach Advisory Committee @ Myrtle Beach City Hall (2:00 PM)
  • Rick Cannon @ Boardwalk Billy's (5:30 PM)
  • Brian Roessler & Skyler Whitfield @ Bourbon Street Bar & Grille (9:30 PM)

From my notebook:

  • Myrtle Beach police are supporting Senate Bill 908 that will ban "Carolina Squat" motor vehicle modifications. The alteration to a truck or SUV makes the front of the vehicle higher than the back, so that it appears to be "squatting." The bill says the style is a safety hazard and should be banned. (WMBF)
  • Myrtle Beach Area Real Estate Roundup: Check out these new real estate listings on the Grand Strand. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  • On MLK Day, volunteers worked in the Booker T. Washington neighborhood with Habitat for Humanity of Horry County at two work sites. A home on King Street got new fencing and railings, and the Boys & Girls Club building got prepped for what will eventually become a new community center. (WBTW) The 2022 Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major Awards breakfast honored community leaders in Myrtle Beach, including a special award given to Dr. Winston McIver, Jr. in honor of the late Bennie Swans. (WBTW)
  • On the same day as MLK Day, actress Betty White would have turned 100 years old. Grand Strand animal shelters took part in the Betty White Challenge, a nationwide campaign to raise money for animal shelters around the United States. (WBTW) Grand Strand Humane Society is continuing the Betty White Challenge on February 5th from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. "Waggin' On The Wheel" is a chance for you and your dog take a ride on the MB Skywheel! (WMBF)
  • Speaking of Grand Strand animal shelters. Here's the latest roster of Myrtle Beach area adoptable pets: dogs, cats & more. (Myrtle Beach Patch)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
