Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. A Myrtle Beach day care worker has been charged with unlawful neglect of a child, police say. The 33-year-old former teacher at Ocean View Teacher Learning Center, the daycare facility associated with Ocean View Baptist Church, had a bond hearing on Wednesday. She was charged with two counts, and is accused of "aggressively grabbing" a one-year-old child, then shoving that child and another one-year-old. A bond of $50,000 was set. (WBTW) (wpde.com) (WMBF)
  2. The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel will be temporarily closed until its technical issues are solved, said officials of the popular attraction. Issues have occurred at least twice recently with some passengers being stuck on the ride last weekend. A routine inspection showed that the same problems were ongoing, so the SkyWheel quickly closed after being reopened briefly. Safety is the SkyWheel's top priority, said officials, and it will reopen when the problems are fully resolved. (WBTW) (WMBF)
  3. Clear the shelter! The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach is 'desperate' for adopters. The shelter is "bursting at the seams with cats and dogs" said the shelter's Executive Director Tina Hunter. She and her staff are asking the community to open up their homes and hearts to provide forever homes to pets in need. On Saturday, HSNMB will hold a special fee-free adoption event at PetSmart in North Myrtle Beach. The event is from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and adoption fees are being covered by several area businesses. (wpde.com) Local business owners can help HSNMB by advertising in its 2023 calendar. Details here:

  5. The City of Myrtle Beach is looking for someone to lead the city's response to the opioid epidemic. The job opening for an Opioid Program Manager offers a salary of $71,000 annually, part of which is paid for via opioid settlement monies the city received earlier this year. The ideal candidate will help create a bridge between nonprofit and private organizations to work together to head up the city's opioid prevention program. Applications for the position are being accepted through September 4 at 5 p.m. (WMBF)
  6. Beach Hippie Coffee is holding an ongoing fundraiser for an 18-month-old child who has endured four open heart surgeries. The Roses For Sophia event takes half the proceeds from all lattés sold at the shop and gives the money to the child's family for medical costs. Sophia was born with ASVD, a treatable medical condition wherein a person has two holes in their heart. Last week, the family had Sophia at MUSC for an operation on her mitral valve. Sophia's mom is a coffee fan, and a regular customer of Beach Hippie Coffee shop. Customers who purchase a latté can fill out a prayer card for Sophia. (WWAY NewsChannel 3) (wpde.com)

Myrtle Beach pic of the day:

Today's pic of the day is an orange-hued stunner from reader Cheryl Mathieu. This photo was taken at sunrise on Cherry Grove Beach. Wow! It's so beautiful! Thank you so much, Cheryl.

From my notebook:

  • Day 3 of Travels with Emilia brought the lucky pup all the way from Oklahoma, through Texas and into New Mexico for an overnight stay at a KOA campground in Grants, NM — just outside of Albuquerque. Emilia is doing great in the back seat of the car, stretching out and cuddling with toys. She's gotten to see lots of gas station dog parks, and has had ample opportunity to get out and stretch her legs along with her human traveling companions. She even met some horses. Emilia's latest Facebook post says "California here I come!" (Kind Keeper Animal Rescue via Facebook)
  • Three Horry County animal investigations this month resulted in over 170 pets being seized. Authorities say this is not normal. Since citizens are reporting tips more often, these types of seizures will likely continue to happen. Staffers are overwhelmed and the HCACC needs donations and adopters. (wpde.com)
  • Visit Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: There's still a bit more time to visit Illumination Park at Broadway at the Beach. Don't let the perfect vacay photo op pass you by! BTW, did we mention that it's 100% free? 😉 📸 (Visit Myrtle Beach, South Carolina via Facebook)
  • A dredging project has resulted in old vehicles being pulled from the Waccamaw River including a 1920s-era locomotive. The locomotive has been on the property of the Grand Strand Water and Sewer Authority for many years. The dredging company will transfer the locomotive from the river to a welder for clean up and restoration. Once restored, the City of Conway will take possession of the vehicle and put it on display for visitors. (wpde.com)
  • House of Blues Myrtle Beach: JUST ANNOUNCED: Face 2 Face - A Tribute to Elton John & Billy Joel coming to the House of Blues Myrtle Beach on Friday, November 25! Get your tickets Friday at 10am: link in bio!" (House of Blues Myrtle Beach via Instagram)
  • SCDHEC reports that South Carolina's COVID-19 cases continue on a steep, downward decline. Case numbers have gone down more than 22% since last week. (WBTW via Twitter)

Now you're in the loop and ready to head out the door on this Thursday. I'll be here Friday morning for the next edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily.

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
