Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. A Myrtle Beach daycare worker has been arrested in Conway and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child. The woman is accused of mistreating children in her care including leaving two children in bouncy chairs for several hours, shaking a crib violently and putting a blanket over a child's head. The incidents occurred at the now defunct KidZone Day Care on McCormick Road which closed its doors in July. The ex-worker is being held at Long Detention Center on $10,000 bond. (WBTW)
  2. The city of Myrtle Beach now has $30 million to pay for new deepwater drainage pipes, thanks to the State of South Carolina. The deepwater ocean fallout project will include installation of 84-inch pipes to help with drainage. The pipes will carry polluted rainwater further into the ocean away from swimming areas. The pipes will run under 24th Avenue North, under the sand on the beach, and 1,500 feet under the ocean. Work is slated to begin about a year from now with a completion date of April, 2025. 3. After an ocean rescue at 15th Avenue North beach access in North Myrtle Beach, a 75-year-old woman has died. NMB Police arrived on scene at the beach around 6 p.m. Wednesday evening to find lifeguards performing CPR on the victim. She was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead there. A cause of death and the victim's identity are not available at this time. (WMBF)
  4. Earlier this week, it was reported that a beachgoer was bitten by "some kind of marine life" near 75th Avenue North beach access in Myrtle Beach. We now know that the bite came from a shark. Another person was bitten by a shark on the same day at the 82nd Avenue North beach. Details or a status on the two victims' conditions have not been released. (wpde.com)
  5. North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue personnel are wearing new helmets that have a passport-style insert on the front, making it easier for crew to be identified at incidents. This will improve accountability, too, says the department. The updated helmets are color-coded for engine, truck, squad and rescue personnel. (wpde.com)

Reader John Rinaldo submitted this photo and rather than writing an introduction in my own words, I'm just going to share what John wrote to me: "Even on cloudy mornings Myrtle Beach sunrises are magnificent." Thanks for the magnificent picture, John!

They say it is normal to expect about a two-week adjustment period before bus schedules are firm. (WMBF)
  • She's an absolute treasure! CCU is welcoming a new therapy dog to its staff and her name is Treasure! • North Myrtle Beach Police wants to remind everyone that we are currently in the midst of hurricane season. The time is now to make a plan and prepare, not when storm landfall is imminent. More information: https://www.noaa.gov/hurricane... (North Myrtle Beach Police via Facebook)
  • The South Carolina Department of Public Safety is deploying its Sober Or Slammer DUI enforcement campaign starting today through Labor Day weekend. The aim of the program is to reduce DUIs but also brings awareness to use of seat belts, speeding, distracted driver behavior and defensive driving. Expect to see increased law enforcement as well as public service announcements on TV, social media and radio. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
