Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Lloyd "Thad" Bowman was honored as Myrtle Beach Firefighter of the Year by the Chicora Rotary Club on Friday. Bowman, who is planning on retiring this fall, has been with the department almost 25 years, and is part of the venomous snake bite team. Once he retires, he will work at Alligator Adventure in its anti-venom unit. Bowman was awarded $1,000, some gift cards, and golf course passes. The three runners-up, Mark Walsh, Joe Friedman, and Lt. Brian Whittington, received $250 each, gift cards, and golf course passes. Bowman was nominated by Lt. Steve McInerney. Bowman was surprised by the nomination, and says he just does his job to help others and has never looked for recognition. (Myhorrynews)
- A celebration of life was held on Saturday honoring Quay Dickens, the Florence teenage athlete who was killed in a deadly shooting last week in Myrtle Beach. Funeral directors estimated that around 1,500 athletes from across South Carolina would be attending the ceremony, which was held in the gymnasium at South Florence High School. Dickens was a star athlete in football, track and field, and basketball. (wpde.com)
- The South Carolina American Red Cross is looking for volunteers ahead of hurricane season. This coming week is National Hurricane Preparedness Week. Hurricane season officially begins June 1, but residents should be prepared well in advance. This year is expected to be an active hurricane season. The Red Cross needs volunteers in all areas of the organization. (WBTW)
- Grand Strand park rangers are preparing for the upcoming sea turtle nesting season, which starts today and goes through October 31. Rangers patrol the beaches, and may relocate nests when necessary. Loggerhead sea turtles, an endangered species, are the SC State Reptile. Only about one in 1,000 loggerhead eggs survives, so it's crucial that beachgoers are aware of the turtles' activity, and that people stay away, keep predators away from nesting areas, don't shine any bright lights on the beach, fill in holes, and smooth out the sand. - Clemson University is going to help Carolina Wildlife Rehabilitation Center by performing special tests on the Muscovy ducks that have been dying at the Ivystone and Palmetto apartments. Clemson will do necropsies and full testing to look for poison and other possible reasons for the mysterious deaths of the birds. Results from the Clemson testing should be available early in the week. (WMBF)
Myrtle Beach pic of the day:
Do you recognize this place? It's one of the sculpture courtyards at Brookgreen Gardens. This unique view of the arches and fountain was sent to me by Gerry de Jose. Thanks for the great photo, Gerry!

- Here's what you can do to prepare for hurricanes ahead of the beginning of the season. Create an evacuation plan, make sure you have an emergency kit on hand, and keep informed on hurricane updates. A hurricane kit should include one gallon of water per person, per day; non-perishable foods; flashlights; cellphone chargers; and important papers such as insurance cards. Remember to check on neighbors, too! (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
