Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. A Myrtle Beach man who was serving in Ukraine as a medic in the Ukrainian military was killed in action last week. Luke Lucyszyn was working in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine when an artillery strike knocked him unconscious and then he was fatally shot. Lucyszyn was 31 years old. He grew up in New Jersey, graduated from West Brunswick (NC) High School, and moved to Myrtle Beach. His grandparents are from Ukraine. Another American was also killed in the strike. (WBTW) (WMBF)
  2. A young man from Myrtle Beach is being called a hero after rescuing a woman who drove into the OrthoSC building in Market Common, struck a gas line and caused a fire on Sunday night. The man saw the crash, ran towards the accident, pulled the woman from the car and saved her life according to city leaders. The injured woman has been released from the hospital. (WRAL News)
  3. Normally our animal rescue stories focus on the overcrowding and near-crisis situations locally, but there is good news in the animal rescue world for South Carolina and Horry County specifically. Best Friends Animal Society released its national overview of dogs and cats that enter shelters each year. Our state has an 84% save rate for shelter animals. The benchmark nationwide is 90% for a shelter to be considered "no-kill." (wpde.com) Horry County Animal Care Center itself saved almost 1,000 more pets in 2021 than previously, putting HCACC in the top 100 "most improved" shelters in the United States. Way to go HCACC! (WMBF)
  4. Golf analyst and Murrells Inlet resident Charlie Rymer is celebrating being cancer-free. Rymer, whose TV show "The Charlie Rymer Golf Show" airs on ESPN2 on Saturday mornings has been dealing with stage 3 colon cancer for about a year. After a number of surgeries and some chemotherapy treatments, Rymer was able to "ring the bell" and celebrate his recovery. (WBTW)
  5. Area restaurants and bars in Surfside Beach are putting competition aside to hold fundraisers for the staff and owners of Neal and Pam's after fire damaged part of their building, causing the bar & grill to close for several weeks. Owner Zach Baker was brought to tears by the outpouring of support and love of his community members. Additional fundraisers in and around town are happening during the coming weeks (full list in the link here). (WMBF) (wpde.com)

Myrtle Beach pic of the day:

Even when a storm is brewing, Myrtle Beach State Park is gorgeous. This photo came in from reader Cindy Valentine as a storm approached the beach last week. Thanks for the pretty pic, Cindy!

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
