- For some Myrtle Beach Marathon runners it was their first marathon since the pandemic began. For others, it was the last run they needed to qualify for the Boston Marathon. But mostly they ran for good causes and to raise awareness on important issues. The weather was perfect for running, and about 4,000 athletes participated. (WMBF)
- The Myrtle Beach Police Department welcomed seven new officers to the department on Friday during a swearing-in ceremony at Collins Law Enforcement Center. The officers are excited to get to work serving and protecting the community. The group is from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy's 754th class. (wpde.com)
- The Grand Strand showed a 13% spike in hotel occupancy this week, regardless of rising gas prices. Local business owners depend on tourists, especially those who travel by car to get here. One business owner estimated that 80% of his customers come here by automobile, or rent a car once they arrive. At the moment, tourists don't seem deterred by the price of gasoline. Myrtle Beach International Airport is also expecting to break records again in 2022. (WMBF)
- Construction on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk remodel began this week, focusing on businesses between Myrtle Beach Pavilion and Plyler Park. Later on, the project will focus on making Ocean Boulevard safer for pedestrians by adding new safety rails. The last time the Boardwalk was repaired was about a dozen years ago. (Myhorrynews)
- Myrtle Beach radio station Energy 92.1 launched a temporary rebrand to support Ukraine this weekend. The station renamed itself Ukraine 92.1. All weekend, the station has been spotlighting people from Ukraine who live on the Grand Strand, and providing information on fundraising and relief efforts. (wpde.com)

From my notebook:
- News13's Pet of the Weekend is Slug! He's an all-gray longer-haired kitty who is approximately three months old. Slug arrived at Grand Strand Humane Society as a stray just a couple days ago, and he's available for adoption. GSHS says he is very calm and he would make a great addition to any family. (WBTW)
- The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: We currently have 24 cats & kittens in our care right now and only one of them has a sponsor! We need your help! What does a sponsor do? It's simple! You sponsor a cat for $50, which helps to cover the cost of food, litter, vaccines and preventive care while the cat is in our care. (Facebook)
- The city dubbed Myrtle Beach High School sophomore, Mandy Vipperman, 'Gatorade Girl' as she handed out cups of the beverage and words of encouragement on Farrow Parkway during Saturday's Myrtle Beach Marathon. (WMBF)
- Sports tourism is critical for the Myrtle Beach economy, say city leaders. Starting with the marathon, the events drawing athletes and their families to the Grand Strand is increasing tourism to the area. Basketball and softball spring training are very busy weeks coming up soon, and golf is also a huge part of spring sports tourism. (WBTW)
- Myrtle Beach Area Chamber Of Commerce started a nonprofit council. The council aims to promote the sustainability and growth of the chamber's nonprofit organizations, and strengthen their role in the Grand Strand community. Networking events and seminars are coming up, and will be open to all nonprofit investors in the chamber. A list of council members serving a two-year term is included in the link. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
