Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- The city of Myrtle Beach, in conjunction with Carolina African American Heritage Foundation and the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, is hosting several events to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.'s work this weekend and next week. Saturday is the MLK parade, Sunday a community ecumenical service. On Tuesday a small business workshop, and on Wednesday there will be a job fair. (WBTW) The CAAHF is also having a Health and Wellness Clinic on Saturday, with a main focus on mental health. The clinic will be at the Boys & Girls Club in Myrtle Beach from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (WMBF)
- Horry County has been ordered by the U.S. Court of Appeals to pay workers' compensation to the family of Horry County deputy Timothy Causey, who died after working a large fire at Windsor Green apartments in 2013. (Myhorrynews)
- Mayor Marilyn Hatley has big plans for North Myrtle Beach in 2022. With so many people moving to the area, she wants to look at improving roads and bridges, and other infrastructure. There are plans to improve the sports complex, build a new emergency operations center, and create a multipurpose path to Little River Neck. (WMBF)
- Restaurants are still feeling the pinch from the pandemic two years later, with many experiencing staffing shortages. Family-owned and family-run Malibu of Surfside is one such local restaurant. Owner Giovanni Massari has made the difficult decision to close the eatery temporarily due to a severe staffing shortage. Most of the workers are members of the family, and the busy restaurant is always hopping, so when too many staff are absent it can create an insurmountable problem keeping customers and employees happy and safe. They are planning to reopen on February 4th. (WBTW)
- Conway Medical Center is ending drive-thru COVID-19 testing because of testing supply chain shortages. Patients who have symptoms will be tested within the hospital system. Those needing tests for work, travel, or school are asked to find a DHEC testing location. (WPDE)

From my notebook:
- The December jobs report is in from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and it shows that the unemployment rate in the Myrtle Beach area worsened. Unemployment in the leisure/hospitality industry — the main Grand Strand source of jobs — is down significantly since February of 2020 when the pandemic began. (Patch)
- Registration is now open for the Myrtle Beach State Park Nature Challenge. The event will take place on March 12th. Registration deadline is February 5th. (WPDE)
- Help kids with reading and literacy! Two news stories this week celebrate reading. Freedom Readers is starting up for in-person (and virtual) tutoring again. There will be four sites in Horry and Georgetown Counties. K through 5 students can register for the spring 2022 session now. (WPDE) United Way of Horry County along with Horry County Schools will have the sixth annual United to Read reading event on February 10th. The event will happen in first-grade classrooms throughout the County. Volunteers are needed! (WMBF)
- Haribo is giving away a 6-night Myrtle Beach vacation to four grand prize winners of the company's 100 Years of Goldbears Giveaway Sweepstakes. The competition started in December, and runs all year until December 1, 2022. There are also other prizes including Carolina Country Music Fest passes, and beach gear. Winners will be announced in January 2023. (WBTW)
- South Carolina Restaurant Week is happening now through January 24th, and eight Myrtle Beach area restaurants are participating in the fun! Check out the specials, discounts and promos at Carolina Ale House, Fuddruckers, Hook & Barrel, Sweetberry Myrtle Beach, Ducati's, and more! (WBTW)
- Economic experts on the Grand Strand are giving their best advice for how to get through the impact of inflation, currently the highest it has been in nearly four decades. The experts suggest saving and not spending, sticking to a budget, and trying not to use credit cards. Those interviewed agree the main reason for the current rise in inflation is the pandemic. Alrighty, you're all good for Saturday. Parts of South Carolina are under a winter storm watch for Sunday, but at the moment it looks as though we here on the coast will just get rain. Governor McMaster has declared a state of emergency in an effort to be prepared. Stay tuned for an update on Sunday!

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
