Here are the top four stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Customers of Myrtle Beach city water, sewer and stormwater will see an increase in their bills starting this month. The city says new rates were approved with the 2022 annual budget. Increases will range between four and five percent for water and sewer. The city's stormwater fee will go up by $1.67 per month per equivalent residential unit (ERU). The city says Grand Strand Water and Sewer Authority had to pass on the increases to customers because of wholesale cost increases it has experienced. (wpde.com)
- This past week, Governor Henry McMaster spent some time in Myrtle Beach to help announce a safe driving awareness campaign between Darlington Raceway and the SC Department of Public Safety. The new partnership between the two entities will encourage drivers to follow good driving practices with the aim of keeping roadways safer. Darlington's Labor Day Race Weekend is September 3 and 4. - Governor McMaster also spoke out this week about hurricane preparedness. The remarks came after the NOAA's hurricane researchers released the latest tropical activity forecast, indicating a slight decrease in activity at the moment. Experts still said that the 2022 hurricane season is expected to be above-average. We are in the peak months right now. McMaster urges South Carolinians to make sure they have a plan in place because changes can happen very quickly. You will not have time to make a plan in the middle of a storm. The time to plan is well ahead of time. Researchers have predicted 18 named storms, including the three that have already come and gone. (wpde.com) (Colorado State University)
- Following up on a story from earlier this year, an Ohio man who had his dream wedding in Myrtle Beach returned to the Grand Strand to celebrate a huge milestone. Hunter Knisley married his bride, Emily in May with their three children in attendance. At the time, Hunter was given a grim diagnosis as part of his lengthy bout with Becker Muscular Dystrophy. He was only expected to live a few weeks. All these months later, Hunter has defied the odds! He returned to Myrtle Beach with his family for summer vacation. (wpde.com)
Myrtle Beach pic of the day:
Reader John LaFemina attended the Van Gogh exhibit in Charleston recently and snapped this photo of two people sitting on a bench in the viewing room where the artist's works were on display. The picture almost looks like a painting itself! Thanks for the really cool pic, John!

- Tim Gould, of Wired, LLC, wanted to put the word out about an electrical panel recall affecting more than a million panels. Gould said homeowners may not be aware of the recall. The panels pose a potential safety issue. The panels were manufactured by Schneider between the dates of February 1, 2020 through January 12, 2022. Gould said customers should not attempt to open or take apart the panels, but instead look at the catalog number inside the panel door. Wired, LLC will repair recalled panels at no cost. A list of affected panel catalog numbers and contact instructions are in the link here: (Patch)
- Horry-Georgetown Technical College announced that the Outboard Marine Technology Program has created an award in memory of Marshall Altman, who played a critical role in developing the college's Yamaha Outboard Marine Technology Program. Altman's family was surprised with the announcement at a special ceremony recently. The first student to receive the Marshall Altman Top Tech Award is Luke Sturdivant. (Press Release Desk)
- The folks at WRAL have outlined some of the perks of adopting a shelter pet and they have some great tips for new pet owners. August is Clear the Shelters month. Some of the perks of adopting an adult shelter pet are that it may already be well-trained from a previous home, mixed breeds are usually healthier than purebred dogs, adopting costs less than purchasing a dog from a breeder and shelter pets have had a head start in great health care! (WRAL)
- News13's pet of the weekend is Millie, an 8-week-old grey tabby kitten available for adoption from Grand Strand Humane Society. Millie loves to be held and is spending quality time at a foster home. Anyone wishing to adopt Millie needs to make an appointment so that the foster family can be sure she's available to meet her new forever family. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
