Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- The latest report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Horry County shows that 538 inpatient beds were occupied at the three area hospitals on the report (Conway Medical Center, McLeod Hospital in Loris, and Grand Strand Medical Center). The report is for hospital beds occupied between December 24-30, 2021. Out of 538 occupied beds, a total of 55 beds were filled by "confirmed and suspected COVID-19 patients." Fifteen of the COVID patients were in ICU beds. (Myrtle Beach Patch) (WPDE) (WBTW)
- National Guard medics are in place at Tidelands Waccamaw and Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospitals to help with the surge in COVID-19 cases. The two hospitals report that their emergency departments have been inundated with patients showing symptoms of the virus, as well as regular, everyday emergency patients. (wpde.com)
- I heard a great interview on the radio Wednesday with Horry-Georgetown Technical College president, Dr. Marilyn Fore. She was on the radio talking about the workforce scholarships the college received from Governor McMaster. Funds are available to cover tuition for high-demand fields that are experiencing staff shortages such as health care. Fore explained that the program will help up to 15,000 students in those areas of study. There are certain requirements applicants must fulfill in order to qualify for the funds. (WMBF)
- A group of around 400 Myrtle Beach residents petitioned against a proposed gas station and convenience store in one neighborhood, and now there is a proposed ordinance that would ban gasoline pumps or underground storage within 500 feet of a residentially zoned lot. The general idea is to add distance between gas stations and residential dwellings, and mainly to prevent building of new gas stations — not to penalize those already operating. But leaders claim the proposal in its current form would eliminate some existing gas stations within city limits. The Planning Commission will review the matter again next month. (WBTW)
- Discrimination is a very real problem in the beer industry, and the owners of Tidal Creek Brewery are taking steps to bring awareness to the problem with a new beer and a launch campaign to focus on misogyny, racism and sexism in the beer industry. Brave Noise hazy pale ale will be brewing for a couple weeks, and when it's ready the folks at Tidal Creek want people to come in and try it out. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the nonprofit service industry aid organization, Another Round, Another Rally. (WMBF)

- A new Chick-fil-A is opening adjacent to the Myrtle Beach Mall at the intersection of Highways 17 and 22 (the mall where Outdoor World is located). It is also hiring. The new location is one of several up and down the Grand Strand, and is centrally-located. (WMBF)
- Brothers of Myrtle Beach gave recognition to a Grand Strand man who turned his life around with the help of A Father's Place, after an eight-year prison stint. Michael Lance turned to A Father's Place when he was having issues making child support commitments. He got a job with the moving company Two Men and a Truck, and has spent the last several years helping people move into new homes. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
