Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. A traffic stop in North Carolina resulted in the arrest of two Myrtle Beach men who were in possession of thousands of grams of drugs, say Horry County Police. The arrest happened in Brunswick County, NC on Highway 17 just over the SC/NC border, near Thomasboro Road. Assorted drugs were seized by the Brunswick County Vice and Narcotics Unit. A search of a home in Myrtle Beach netted more drugs and over $5,000 in cash. Both men are in Brunswick County Detention Center and face multiple drug charges. (WBTW)
  2. Authorities have a 62-year-old man in custody after two homes in Socastee were hit with bullets on Saturday night. Horry County Police were embroiled in a lengthy standoff with the man, and authorities kept mum on developments until Monday afternoon. Witnesses say the man walked to the end of his driveway in the Everett Street neighborhood of Socastee, and began shooting a firearm down the road in two directions. A bullet hit the side of a mobile home nearby, and another bullet went through the wall of a porch and landed inside a kitchen. The man has been charged with two counts of discharging firearms into a dwelling. (WBTW)
  3. The Spring Tide Clean Up at Morse Landing in Murrells Inlet was a huge success on Sunday. Volunteers made it so, and celebrated the event's 30-year anniversary. They cleaned up litter along the roadways in Murrells Inlet, took their kayaks and paddleboards into the marsh to clean up the water. They found lots of plastic straws in the water, and a large amount of trash and garbage along the roads. (WMBF)
  4. There's another lucky lottery winner in Myrtle Beach! This time the winning ticket was for the Mega Millions game, and it was sold at Publix on Oakheart Road. The kitty? A cool ten grand! The customer matched four white ball numbers and the gold Megaball number in Friday's game. They have 180 days from the drawing date to claim their prize. (wpde.com)
  5. The Horry County Coroner's office has identified two people hit and killed recently in two separate traffic incidents. Paul Liwock, 38, of Conway, was doing construction work on Highway 90 when he was struck by a vehicle near Quail Ridge Boulevard. (WBTW) On Friday, 62-year-old Kelvin Smalls, a homeless man, was hit on Highway 701 at 2301 Main Street in Conway. Both incidents are under investigation, and charges were not mentioned in the news reports as of the time of this posting. (wpde.com)

Myrtle Beach pic of the day:

This stunning pic is from Diane Granic who submitted this photo recently. It doesn't get much better than a pelican enjoying the Murrells Inlet Marsh across from Garden City. Thanks, Diane, for the cool photograph!

  • There's no denying that the Grand Strand is a dog-friendly destination, but remember to follow the rules when on the beaches. Summer rules are now in effect for dogs on the beach in Myrtle Beach. The summer rules begin on May 15 for North Myrtle Beach. Pawleys Island and Georgetown County beaches allow pets all year, with specific rules about leashing. In all cases, dogs must be leashed with leash length 7-feet or shorter. Always pick up after your dog and dispose of pet waste properly. See the link for specific details about times of day and effective start and end dates. If your dog is not a "beach person," there are plenty of places to hike or walk, and there are a few dog parks as well. (Visit Myrtle Beach)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
