Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- North Myrtle Beach's new regulations for kayak companies are making waves, after the City Council gave its approval to a 10% fee that will be imposed on kayak businesses. Six of those kayak tour companies will receive contract offers from the city, but some of the business owners say the fee will cut their business income significantly, with one describing it as a "dagger to the heart" of the kayak businesses. The move focuses mainly on the Cherry Grove Boat Landing on 53rd Avenue North, where the city has capped the number of available business licenses for kayak companies to six. A new ramp is being built for the kayak business traffic, leaving the current ramp for recreational boaters and kayakers. The adjacent parking lot, which has always been free, will now have $2 per hour parking rates, as do most of the city's beach parking areas. (Myhorrynews)
- Horry County authorities have charged a Longs man with animal cruelty after five deceased dogs, and four other dogs that were emaciated and severely dehydrated, were found on his property. The man is being charged with nine counts of felony ill treatment of animals, in addition to some other charges relating to stolen property and firearms. The four surviving dogs were taken to Horry County Animal Care Center for emergency medical treatment, and are being cared for there. (WBTW)
- Leaders in Myrtle Beach are postponing a decision on reducing the amount of time the public has to give feedback on various structural projects. The planning commission heard from more than half-a-dozen residents during a hearing this week. The residents expressed concern over the changes in time limits to provide feedback — from 10 business days to 10 calendar days. Citizens want to be able to speak out about proposed building projects in their neighborhoods. The commission will review the issue again at a future meeting. (WBTW)
- The Rape Crisis Center of Horry and Georgetown Counties held a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week to welcome its new executive director, Lindy Studds. The center is a private, nonprofit organization that helps sexual violence survivors with a 24-hour hotline, and other services. The center is looking for volunteers, and is spreading awareness during the month of April, which is sexual assault awareness month. (WMBF)
- Horry County Council voted unanimously to move ahead with developing an 800-acre solar farm in Bucksport. The acreage is off Highway 701, and the 55-megawatt solar farm will power more than 9,000 homes. At the same meeting, Council did not agree on the No Fireworks Zone ordinance that had been proposed for quite some time. Council will address that issue at a later date. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
