Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Captain Archie's bar and restaurant was named as a defendant in a wrongful death lawsuit wherein the main defendant pleaded guilty to reckless homicide. Jayson Angus of North Myrtle Beach entered the plea in the death of Leigh Ann Kurtz, who died after a motorcycle crash while Angus was driving. The pair had left Captain Archie's in May of 2019, and hit a concrete median on Old Highway 17, causing the two to be thrown off the motorcycle and into the road. Kurtz died of her injuries a few days later. Her family filed the wrongful death suit. Angus was ordered to pay over $800,000 to Kurtz's estate, while the restaurant agreed to pay $750,000. Captain Archie's was accused of serving excessive alcoholic beverages to Angus. (WMBF)
- The Myrtle Beach area real estate market keeps soaring, and local agents say the Grand Strand has become a haven for retirees. The region is more appealing than some more traditional retirement destinations, like Florida, which may be too hot year-round, and too far from family in the northern states. Single-family homes are hard to come by, though, and prices have increased due to the record low inventory and record high demand on the Grand Strand. (Myhorrynews)
- With the growth we've seen here on the Grand Strand, it's no surprise that South Carolina made the top 5 states in population growth during the pandemic, according to Rent.com. Using U.S. Census data from 2020 and 2021, the company confirmed South Carolina was the only state to enter its top 5 list, with over 70,000 new residents moving to the state. Cheaper rents, job opportunities, warm temps, and lots of green space were the reasons for a move to SC, according to the company. (WPDE)
- One person died when their car overturned into a retention pond near Highway 22 and Kings Road. The 2017 Honda sedan ran off the road and flipped over when the driver attempted to take the exit onto Highway 22 from Highway 17 northbound. The identify of the person killed is not known at this time. SCHP is investigating. (WBTW)
- DHEC is expanding its 'Test to Stay' (TTS) recommendation to childcare facilities, and has updated COVID-19 guidance for K-12 schools. Updated masking requirements and testing requirements for sports and other activities are now in place for K-12 students. Childcare centers are using the TTS recommendations similar to the ones already being used by the state's school districts. (WYFF4)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
