Partly sunny and humid. High: 79 Low: 64.
Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- In its first meeting since a federal judge ruled against banning mask mandates in South Carolina, the Horry County Schools Board has officially decided it will not mandate masks for students at this time. Superintendent Rick Maxey cited data from the district's COVID-19 dashboard, which shows an average drop of 26.5 cases per day and fewer quarantines, to support the Board's decision. Maxey noted that if the situation should change, "I would certainly be making a recommendation that we look at a mask mandate for schools that may be impacted or an attendance area." (WBTW)
- Myrtle Beach is considering following the lead of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which is enforcing a new standard that dictates oceanfront single-family residential properties be at least eight feet above the ground. If enforced, new construction in Myrtle Beach will have to meet the eight-foot elevation requirements. Public information director Mark Kruea says city council wants to approve the standard in the next couple of months, because "they are required to do it in order for the city to be eligible for federal flood insurance for those properties." (WMBF News)
- A local organization dedicated to helping people recover from homelessness and poverty has announced an update on expanding its facility. After a brief construction delay, New Directions of Horry County will begin work to add 74 beds and six bathrooms to the existing 90-bed shelter. The expansion is expected to be completed by Nov. 1., at which time the shelter can begin accepting individuals from its growing waitlist. (WBTW)
- Bass Pro Shops in Myrtle Beach is currently hiring extra employees ahead of the holiday season. A hiring event will be held on Oct. 13 and Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Bass Pro Shops located at 10177 North Kings Highway. The store is looking to fill 35 openings in several retail departments. (WPDE)
- After being closed for the last couple of weeks, the 27-hole River Oaks Golf Club has announced the permanent closure of nine of its holes, known as the Bear nine, due to a recent sale. Chris Manning Communities purchased the nine holes for $3 million and plans to redevelop the property into about 200 single-family home lots. (Myrtle Beach Online)
