Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- North Myrtle Beach is having its first St. Patrick's Day Parade since 2019, today! After two years of COVID-19 cancellations, and then last week's postponement due to weather, the city is more than ready to have some fun on Main Street. The parade begins at 9:00 a.m., and will last about two hours. Main Street will be closed to traffic starting at 8:15. Ocean Boulevard will be closed from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m. Plan accordingly even if you are not attending the events. Main Street from Ash Street to Ocean Boulevard will be closed for the parade and festival, which begins at 11:00. Detailed parking info is listed in the link here. (Myhorrynews)
- On Sunday, Tidal Creek Brewhouse in Market Common is featuring Ukrainian food exclusively on its dinner menu. One of the brewery's founders has close ties to Ukraine. Customers can round up their tab to the nearest dollar for Ukrainian relief. There will be live music from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., and the five choices of Ukrainian food will be available from 3:00 to 8:30 p.m. (wpde.com)
- Even with a shortage of attorneys, Horry County's court case backlog is better than other South Carolina counties. Cases are piling up as a result of COVID-19 delays, and now there is some difficulty hiring attorneys. The 15th Circuit Solicitor says his office is down to five, and they used to receive hundreds of resumes when an opening was advertised, but nowadays they barely get any response. One thing that helped Horry County is that the court system did not shut down entirely during the pandemic. Instead, it held hearings virtually whenever possible. Horry County currently has the fifth-lowest number of backlogged cases in the state. (WBTW)
- On Friday, Coastal Carolina University's Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and University Recreation, Matt Hogue, announced that the university is making a change after evaluating the women's basketball program. The university will be hiring a new women's basketball coach, he announced, after thanking current coach Jaida Williams for her nine years of service and dedication to the program. (WBTW)
- There's a new position at Horry County PD. The department is hiring a crime analyst who can identify "hot spot" crime areas and pinpoint where a criminal may strike next. The analyst will gather and look at information on crime trends in the community, identify habits of criminals, and provide predictive analyses to deduce the likelihood of a crime taking place. About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
