Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Home prices in the north strand have soared quite a bit in the last year. North Myrtle Beach's average home price is up $120K over this time last year. Average home prices in Little River are up $95K. Carolina Forest came in a close third with an increase of $91K. (WBTW)
- On Monday, the city of North Myrtle Beach was declared a Purple Heart City. Mayor Marilyn Hatley is honoring military and combat veterans, Gold Staf families, Purple Heart recipients and their families at the city's council meeting. (wpde.com)
- A new arcade bar, called Player1UP is opening later this week in Murrells Inlet. The arcade will be located where Millardo's Pizza used to be, off Highway 17 Business. The retro arcade will feature old-school game machines like Donkey Kong and Pac-Man, and my personal favorite... pinball machines! Newer games will also be there, as well as pool tables and skeeball. (WMBF)
- Senator Shane Massey (R-SC) is reviving a bill to prevent public employers from requiring the COVID-19 vaccine. His proposal also would impose fines on private companies requiring the vaccine at $7,500 per employee fired due to not getting the shot. Thursday, a subcommittee approved the bill, and now it is with the Senate Finance Committee. Some business organizations, such as the SC Chamber of Commerce, are against the bill, claiming private companies should have the option to require the vaccine without incurring penalties. (WPDE)
- Governor McMaster has announced that the state of South Carolina will have no part in punishing people serving in the National Guard if they are not vaccinated against COVID-19. The governor sent a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin asking him to reconsider the Department of Defense's directive that imposes vaccine mandates on members of the South Carolina National Guard. From my notebook:
- Check out the latest recently-posted jobs in the Grand Strand area. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
- High school notebook: Socastee's athletic field upgrades are a sign of what's to come district-wide. The Socastee primary athletic fields are getting a full makeover, with synthetic playing surfaces and new bleachers. There could be a video board installed in the near future, too. At a cost of $1.5 million, the project will take about 8-10 weeks to complete. (Myhorrynews)
- If you've ever bemoaned the fact that there is no Trader Joe's on the Grand Strand, you are not alone. The nearest Trader Joe's stores are over an hour away in both directions (north and south). But there is a group called SALT (Senior Adventures in Learning and Travel) who go to Wilmington and elsewhere just to shop at the iconic store. The group also has visited a monastery, and they go out to eat lunch on their trips. (Raleigh News & Observer)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
