Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Myrtle Beach leaders, engineers and residents gave their input for safety improvements on Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach at a meeting Tuesday night. Over the last five years there have been over 1,000 crashes on Ocean Boulevard. The first order of business for city leaders is that they want to hear from you. Some ideas already submitted include painting bicycle lanes, shutting down Ocean Boulevard on weekends, and making more uniform signage. (WMBF)
  2. Shooting fireworks may soon be a year-round activity in Surfside Beach. Up until now, fireworks have only been allowed in Surfside on July 4, but it looks like that may change. A new ordinance would allow shooting fireworks every day, almost anywhere in town with a couple of exceptions. Fireworks would not be allowed overnight between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Other restrictions apply, check out the link for more details. (Myhorrynews)
  3. The pickin's are slim as far as single-family homes for sale on the Grand Strand lately! Here are two Myrtle Beach area open houses scheduled on Friday and Saturday. One is in Surfside Beach, the other is a two-story home in Myrtle Beach. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  4. Think INSIDE the box! Visitors to Matt Hughes Skate Park in Myrtle Beach now have access to a "Giving Box" if they want to skate at the park but don't own a skateboard! The unique idea was a special project done by the STEAM class at Pepper Geddings Recreation Center, and the box was built from repurposed materials that children aged 5 to 10 helped gather up from leftover projects at the recreation center. Inside the box are five skateboard decks, three sets of wheels, and some stickers. (wpde.com)
  5. Horry County is getting busy installing 23 license-plate readers along major roads leading into and out of the county. Cameras will take a photo of a car's plate as it passes by, and the photos will be sent to the National Crime Information Center. The idea is to locate stolen vehicles, and missing persons. The cameras are set to be fully installed this year, within the next several weeks to months. Each camera costs over $2,000 and funding came from multiple grants. (WBTW)

  • A 15-year-old girl who was a Type 1 diabetes patient at Grand Strand Medical Center more than two years ago made news when she reunited with the nurse who took care of her, and introduced the nurse to the service dog that shares her name. Caroline Kay was cared for by Penny Doyle, who has been a nurse for more than 30 years. When Caroline got her service dog, who is a specially-trained diabetes alert dog, she named the labradoodle Penny, after her favorite GSMC nurse! Their reunion was emotional, as the two reminisced and caught up on the past couple of years. (WBTW)

That's it for Thursday, Grand Strand! I'll see you Friday for another edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily.

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
