Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Whoops! A Murrells Inlet woman took to social media to help find a painting created by her father that was accidentally donated to Goodwill. The two used to go to the Murrells Inlet Marsh a lot, and her father would paint what he saw. This painting was on the wall of the family's beach house, but during recent renovations it somehow wound up in a donation pile, and out it went. Megan Sandefur posted on Facebook that the painting was brought to Goodwill in Murrells Inlet, and asks if anyone saw it or purchased it, the family would like it returned to them. She is offering a reward for the painting. (WMBF) (Facebook)
- On the North Strand, you've probably seen all the campaign signs for Jenna Dukes lately, as we approach the state's primary on June 14. Dukes is the owner of Cherry Grove Drug, and she's poised to bring a fresh approach to Horry County Council if she gets elected next month. She's challenging incumbent Harold Worley for the District 1 seat, that covers North Myrtle Beach, Little River, and Atlantic Beach. (Myhorrynews) As for Worley, he's the longest-serving member of Horry County Council, and doesn't see his work being finished any time soon. (Myhorrynews)
- Ultramarathoners Shan Riggs and Joshuaine Grant breezed through Myrtle Beach on Friday during their 3,000-plus mile run from Key West to the northeast. The two are racking up about 40 miles a day, and hope to complete the trek in about three months. The run is to raise awareness of The Greenway, with an aim of making the challenging route safer for runners and cyclists. Riggs runs, while Grant tows their supplies by bicycle. (WMBF)
- On Mondays throughout the month of May, MBPD is putting a spotlight on mental health services around the area. The community initiative began last year, in partnership with Waccamaw Center for Mental Health. The program includes having mental health professionals available to assist officers when they are responding to certain situations and training new recruits on the types of mental illness they might encounter. - Socastee High School students have helped raise over $14,000 to build a new home for a homeless veteran. The students presented a check to Veteran's Welcome Home resource center on Friday. The group of students are part of the Chick-fil-A Leader Academy. The new home will be located on 3rd Avenue in Myrtle Beach. (wpde.com)
Myrtle Beach pic of the day:
Saturday's pic of the day is another stunner! This one is from Bob and Claire Bornstein who sent in this shot of the gorgeous sunrise at Garden City Beach. Thanks for the beautiful photograph, Bob and Claire!

From my notebook:
- There's still time to enjoy the festivities at the World Famous Blue Crab Festival in Little River today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. I went to the event on Saturday, and had the thrill of finally meeting local author Caleb Wygal, who signed three of his books for me! We also got to see some of the adorable puppies and kitties available for adoption from Kind Keeper Animal Rescue, ate some great food and listened to fantastic music by the Port City Players of Wilmington and others. - The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: Hi there! I'm Kyle! I love playing, running, giving kisses, being told I'm a good boy, and I love people! Things I don't love: watching people choose other dogs to adopt. I am two years old and came from the US Virgin Islands! I am a beach boy through and through! I love being active, so if you're the kind of person who likes adventure, then we'll be the perfect match! I would like to mention that I am also very smart and have been doing well during my weekly training sessions at the shelter. Please call the humans at 843-249-4948 to schedule an appointment to meet me! (Facebook)
- News13's Pet of the Weekend is Autumn, a 2-month-old calico kitten who is available for adoption from Grand Strand Humane Society. Autumn is one of many felines currently at the shelter, and the organization is looking for foster homes in a big way. If you can't adopt, why not consider being a foster parent for a furry friend? Applications for fostering or adoption are available on GSHS's website. (WBTW)
- Myrtle Beach Police Department: Lt. Amick along with community partners took part in the J1 Visa student orientation! This orientation happens every Wednesday through the spring and summer. Did you know Myrtle Beach hosts over 2000 J1 students during the spring and summer months? (Facebook)
- DC BLOX is a provider of connected data centers in the Southeast, and has announced its plan to build a Cable Landing Station in Myrtle Beach. This is the undersea cable system you may have heard about that will connect North America's southeast region to other continents. The project is expected to be completed in 2023. DC BLOX's other SC data center, in Greenville, opened in January. (dcblox.com)
- Giving the South Strand a little time in the spotlight, the Georgetown Food, Beer and Wine Festival will be happening Saturday, May 21, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the historic Downtown area of the city. Live music from The Stuart Pritchett Band, N'Tranz and The Kevin Nichols Band will be on tap along with craft beers, food and wines for sampling. (HistoricGeorgetownSC.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
