Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Have you seen this car? SC Highway Patrol is looking for the driver of a burgundy 2015 Nissan Versa involved in a fatal hit and run case. The driver hit a bicyclist on Thursday night around 10:30 p.m. on Kings Highway near Catherine Avenue, near the PirateLand Camping Resort, troopers said. The driver left the scene, and the victim, whose name has not yet been released, died at the scene. The vehicle would likely have damage to the passenger side front and headlight area, with a portion of the inner fender well liner missing. Anyone with information should call (843) 661-4705 or contact CrimeStoppers. (wpde.com)
- St. James High School's athletic director, Billy Hurston, has been put on administrative leave by the Horry County School District. The coach and a student had a verbal altercation on Thursday afternoon. The district said the incident is being investigated, but no one revealed what the altercation was about, or what was said or done during the incident. (WMBF)
- During the pandemic, South Carolinians were allowed to purchase alcoholic beverages curbside. Now, lawmakers are pushing for that option to become permanent in the state. Certain businesses would be able to offer delivery or pick-up services for beer and wine. Restaurants and bars would not be permitted to do so. (WBTW)
- Horry County Planning Commission approved two residential rezoning proposals that could bring almost 200 new homes to the Longs area. There was little opposition to the proposals. Venture Engineering would build about 90 single-family homes along Kayla Circle and Highway 9. Development Resource Group got approved to build 72 single-family homes along Chestnut Road. The residents who did express concerns are prepared to bring those concerns forward to Horry County Council when the items hit Council's agenda for final approval. (wpde.com)
- Myrtle Beach Police officers may soon be the highest paid in the state, thanks to proposed pay increases expected to take effect for the next fiscal year which starts July 1. MBPD currently has nearly 50 openings and the pay increase will help with recruitment and retention of officers. City Council has to approve the increases after two readings. (WBTW)

- I recently reported that the new Avelo flights between Myrtle Beach and New Haven, CT would be operating year-round every day of the week except Wednesdays, based on a WMBF News article. A reader contacted me and informed me that they tried to book one of the flights for this coming September, and it showed the operating days as Monday, Friday, and Saturday only. I am looking into the accurate information on these flights, and will post additional info as it becomes available. Thanks for your patience. (WMBF)
- Assistant Director of Public Information Meredith Helline, City of Myrtle Beach: New walkovers are being built in Myrtle Beach. One of the City of Myrtle Beach's annual projects can be easily found along the beach! You may have noticed the dune walkovers that've been replaced in various parts of the city at our beach accesses. We replace about five each year leading into the summer. The new walkovers will be made ADA compliant if possible, redesigned if needed and last for about 20 years. So far, four dune walkovers have been completed at 17th and 18th Avenues North and Ocean Boulevard. The walkover under construction is at 24th Avenue North. Walkovers at 70th and 73rd Avenues North are on the schedule as well! Thank you to our teams for getting this great work done in the heat! (Nextdoor)
- Horry County has a number of job opportunities listed on its website. Applications are accepted online only (no paper applications). Fill out the application and submit, and you'll get an email confirmation. Some jobs have a specific application deadline. (HorryCounty.org)
- The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: BONDED PAIR Simba (white) and his brother Jake (blonde) were surrendered to us in February because they were not a fan of the new baby in the home getting all the attention. They were adopted in March, but unfortunately, after about a month they were returned because the adopters are now traveling. They are 6-year-old lab mixes, very smart and friendly. Available for adoption and need a forever home together! (Facebook)
- Horry-Georgetown Technical College dental hygiene students have all passed the clinical boards exam this semester. All 18 seniors graduating from the Dental Hygiene program will now be ready to enter the workforce as Registered Dental Hygienists once they get licensed by the SC Board of Dentistry. Congrats all! About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
