Here are the top 5 stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Property owner Wanda Banning has filed a lawsuit against the Horry County Council, naming its members as defendants, in a rezoning case. Banning owns over 60 acres of land zoned for agricultural use. The Council passed a Resolution without allowing property owners to voice concerns on rezoning issues. The Resolution was passed in November of 2020, has no expiration date, and does not support an additional rezoning of a stretch of land from Highway 9 to the North Carolina state line on Highway 57. Legal docs indicate the plaintiff is claiming a $5 million loss in profits. (WBTW)
  2. The Salvation Army's annual Angel Tree program helps children in need celebrate Christmas. The Salvation Army of Horry County opened its phone bank for donations on Monday night for a final push to reach its goal of $50,000. As of Monday morning, $10,720 had been raised. The deadline to donate to the program is Wednesday, December 15. (WMBF)
  3. United Way conducted a Community Needs Assessment recently to take Horry County's pulse on health issues, specifically mental health. The organization says it is going to shift its health focus, after discovering that around 55% of Horry County residents surveyed needed mental health care last year. Therefore, starting in 2023, United Way will devote its health programs solely to mental health. (WBTW)
  4. Myrtle Beach's downtown Arts and Innovation District is starting to take visible shape after a months-long revitalization project. The first new business has been approved to take up residence in the new area (LeManna's Bakery). The project will likely include a performing arts center, a new library, a co-working space, and maybe even some residential units, in what's being envisioned as a mixed-use area of the city. (Myhorrynews)
  5. Grand Strand area postal carrier, Jeff Hunt, says he has a dream job and wouldn't trade it for the world, especially at Christmas time. The Loris postal worker finds this time of year the most exciting and joyful, and he loves delivering holiday packages throughout the city. The U.S. Postal Service recommends sending first class mail packages out no later than Friday, December 17th so they'll reach the intended recipients by the 25th! (WPDE)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
