Puppies Rescued+Sweet New Store+Flood Predictions+Black Bear Seen

The Myrtle Beach Daily is the quickest way to get caught up on everything worth knowing today on the Grand Strand.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, people of the Grand Strand! It's me again, Kathy Mandell, your host of the Myrtle Beach Daily. It's Tuesday, July 20, 2021, and today you'll hear from me about two neglected puppies rescued from a hot car, a new sweet store in Myrtle Beach, new findings on what the next decade or so will bring the Grand Strand in terms of flooding, a black bear was spotted in Little River, and an update on that weekend arrest near Holmestown Road.

Before we start let's take a quick peek at today's weather: Rain and scattered thunderstorms for most of the day and evening. High: 82 Low: 74.

Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Two puppies approximately eight weeks old were found in a hot car with the windows slightly cracked allowing no ventilation, and a woman was later issued a summons for mistreatment of animals. The terrier puppies were infested with fleas, and covered in their own waste. One of the pups was anemic. Both were taken to the humane society for care. They had been in a crate in the back seat of the woman's car, which was parked in a parking lot at Rhodes MB Sports Center for about 30-45 minutes before someone called police. (WMBF)
  2. 22-year-old twin sisters Katelyn and Kristyn Cromer opened their new cotton candy store near Highway 501 in Myrtle Beach this past weekend. They hope to make their food stand, Beachside Fluff, a sweet treat for Grand Strand customers. Their product is cotton candy with fun toppings such as unicorn sprinkles, M&Ms, and other goodies. The ladies started the business with their mom, Janella Pryce, and have a mobile capacity so they can attend parties and get-togethers with their fun cotton candy creations. (WBTW)
  3. NASA Sea Level Change researchers predict that coastal South Carolina will see a sharp increase in flooding over the next decade or two. Global warming is one factor, but also the moon's affect on the tides will increase the chances of flooding. The researchers explained that a "wobble" in the moon's orbit causes tide cycles to become more amplified, with high tides getting higher, and low tides getting lower. The change will see more days per year of flooding, but this will happen over a decade or two. (WPDE)
  4. A Little River family caught an unusual sight on camera while driving home from Mullins on Sunday. As they were driving down Highway 9, they spotted a black bear running alongside the road. One of the family members captured the animal on video as they drove past. SCDNR says bears are the largest land mammals in SC, and there were about 250 bear/human encounters in 201974 of those encounters in the coastal area of the state. (WBTW)
  5. An update on the report about a man arrested near Holmestown Road on Sunday, shows that the man was a fugitive wanted for making threats of terrorism in Georgia. He had barricaded himself in an apartment building on Paddington Court on Sunday. Police received a call about a wanted person. After unsuccessful attempts at negotiating, a SWAT team was dispatched to the area. The man tried to escape through a back door but was apprehended. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
