A look at Saturday's weather:
Sunny in the morning, with possible showers around in the p.m. High: 83 Low: 54.
Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Myrtle Beach leaders are joining other municipalities all around the U.S. in the Rails to Trails unused railroad corridor project. Participation in the project here will ultimately connect the Intracoastal Waterway to the beach. Once the railroad tracks are removed and replaced with paved surfacing, people will be able to walk and bicycle on the trails. The Myrtle Beach train depot will be used as the starting point for the route that will become part of the nationwide Greenway Trail. (wpde.com)
- Officials at Myrtle Beach International Airport have announced their plans for off-season expansion and improvement projects to prepare for the continued popularity of the Grand Strand as a tourist destination. The project includes changes to TSA and baggage handling, new concession stands, possible gate expansions, and canopies over the rental car lot. (WMBF)
- Meanwhile, downtown, Ocean Boulevard is seeing growth amid high demand from tourists as well. The new, 25-story Marriott hotel complex will be completed in 2022, and two other hotels are being proposed on the south end of Ocean Boulevard. A parking garage is being added at the Westgate Resort. The MB Chamber of Commerce says that weekend festivals and events are keeping tourism numbers high year-round. (WBTW)
- Middle school students in Socastee participated in several life-saving classes provided by the Myrtle Beach Fire Department this week. The Grand Strand kids learned CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver, working with life-like dummies. The students also learned how to use defibrillators. The program will continue to be offered regularly at Socastee Middle School. (wpde.com)
- Horry County Animal Care Center in cooperation with Conway Ford will hold an adoption event at the Ford dealership in Conway to find new homes for 60-80 dogs and cats. The event starts at 9:00 a.m., and adoption fees will be waived. As reported earlier this week, each adopted pet will also be sent home with a free bag of pet food that was part of a large donation from Chewy and the Humane Society of the U.S. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
