Here are the top three stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Myrtle Beach seems to have become the new migration destination for out-of-staters seeking a lower cost of living and plenty of space to build. According to city data, it has been a record-breaking year for residential and commercial building permits in Myrtle Beach. More than 9,000 permits were issued here over the last year, including 750 new single-family home permits, primarily in the Market Common and the Del Webb Grande Dunes area. The city also reportedly issued permits for renovations, a new multi-family residence, 56 new commercial buildings, and 21 mobile homes. (WBTW)
- Tax-free weekend kicked off yesterday across South Carolina, and for the next few days, Myrtle Beach residents can expect to see local sales taxes and the state-wide 6 percent sales tax dropped on certain items. Now through Sunday, Myrtle Beach's 1 percent capital improvements tax and the 1 percent tourism development fee will not apply to clothing and clothing accessories, shoes, school supplies, computers, printers, and some bedroom and bathroom items. Retail experts say this is a great weekend to stock up on back-to-school items, but plan ahead for your shopping trip: Tax-free weekend is "the busiest weekend of the year" for shopping centers like Tanger Outlets, said marketing director Stephanie Parisi. (WBTW)
- Thirty years after the City of Myrtle Beach purchased the property, the historic and hidden Oak Street Cemetery is finally being restored. Located on three-quarters of an acre behind the Myrtle Beach Convention Center and the Myrtle Beach Health Department, this cemetery serves as the final resting place for African American veterans from both World Wars, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Initial restoration work began in March, and this week, flowers were planted in the front entryway and a water irrigation system was installed. In the near future, the City is reportedly looking to install a new signage archway. (WMBF)
