Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- A 14-year-old girl who was rescued while surfing near the 72nd Avenue North section of Myrtle Beach with her brother has died. Andrea Renee Brown of Four Oaks, North Carolina, was visiting Myrtle Beach with her family when she and her brother needed to be rescued from the ocean on April 15. She was transferred from a local hospital to MUSC, where she died a few days later. A funeral in her hometown will be held on Saturday. (WMBF)
- Charges will not be filed in the death of Florida woman, Sheridan Wahl, who was visiting Myrtle Beach last September when she went missing. The situation had some unusual twists and turns, and then Wahl's body was discovered near a fire department training tower in Florence County, about an hour from Myrtle Beach. Her car was found burned in a cornfield in Scranton, SC. The Florence County coroner released the results of an autopsy this week, and has determined that Wahl's death was from multiple injuries due to an accidental fall. Toxicology results did not find any illicit drugs in her system, and evidence of foul play was ruled out. The manner of death will be classified as "Undetermined." (wpde.com)
- As plans move ahead for Memorial Day Weekend's upcoming Bikefest, the City of Myrtle Beach has determined there will not be a traffic loop rerouting vehicles to Highway 31 this year. The controversial traffic loop was the focus of an NAACP lawsuit filed in 2018 accusing the city of implementing policies that discriminate against the mostly African American attendees of Atlantic Beach Bikefest. This year, the city will have one-way traffic on Ocean Boulevard so emergency vehicles will be able to respond promptly. (wpde.com) (WMBF)
- The Loris Police Department has donated 12 body cameras to the Atlantic Beach Police Department. All officers in South Carolina are required to wear body cameras, and the ABPD has had them since the rule went into effect, but with short-life batteries that deplete a charge so quickly, they only last about half a shift. Now that LPD has donated 12 more cameras to Atlantic Beach PD, every officer has a second camera as backup when needed. Having a working body cam at all times is a crucial tool. Atlantic Beach PD is also hiring more officers. (WBTW)
- Hurricane season is coming, and Grand Strand first responders are training to be fully prepared. The Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team (HART) held training sessions at Myrtle Beach International Airport this week, along with paramedics, EMTs, members of the national guard, and fire marshals. The team is ready for the situations they can encounter during hurricanes, and they also help out in other states if needed. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
