Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Candidate Russell Fry made national news Tuesday when he won the Republican nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives, District 7 over incumbent Tom Rice. Rice delivered a friendly concession speech, congratulating Fry and asking Republicans to unite. (wpde.com)
- In Horry County, Jenna Dukes won a seat on the Horry County Council over incumbent Harold Worley. There will be a runoff for Horry County Council Chair between candidates Mark Lazarus and Johnny Gardner on June 28. (WBTW)
- If you were in the Windy Hill area Tuesday afternoon, like I was, you may have experienced a brief power outage. A boom from a utility truck hit some power lines in Atlantic Beach causing a huge fire and a power failure. There were no injuries reported, and HC Fire Rescue was able to douse the fire quickly. (WMBF)
- Dawn dishwashing liquid and volunteers to the rescue. A young swan became saturated in cooking oil that had apparently been disposed of improperly near one of the lakes at Ocean Lakes Campground. The juvenile bird was weighed down by the oil, and had been ingesting the substance in efforts to clean itself. The bird was near death when volunteers arrived. Five baths in Dawn dish soap, and the swan is doing better, but still not out of danger. The rescuers will monitor the bird closely and continue to provide care. Cooking oil should be disposed of properly in designated areas at the camping resort. (wpde.com)
- North Myrtle Beach crews are preparing for maintenance dredging in Cherry Grove. Some parking spots are unavailable at Cherry Grove Park and Boat Ramp while crews construct a barge landing and use an area near the Cherry Grove Beach Canals between 42nd Avenue North and 62nd Avenue North. Work is set to begin some time after October 1, during the off-season, which ends March 31, 2023. (WMBF)

- The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: Keep pets safe in the heat! Provide ample shade and water for your fur babies to keep them hydrated and prevent overheating if they are outdoors. Always check under and around your car for cats, limit walks to early morning or evening, never leave your pet in the car, and check the pavement for heat: if it's too hot for your feet, it's too hot for paws. Keep pets indoors in air-conditioning. (The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach via Facebook)
- Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon: The 13th Annual Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon is happening October 15!™🥇 😎 The Coastal 5K and Doggie Dash will kick off the weekend in Market Common. Followed by the main event, the Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon. (Myrtle Beach Mini Marathon via Instagram)

- Are you in the market for a new place to call home? Redfin and Patch have you covered with this week's list of open houses in the Myrtle Beach area. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
- If you've ever driven Interstate 95 from the northeast, you've seen all the South of the Border billboards encouraging you to stop and visit the iconic roadside attraction located on the border of North and South Carolina, about 90 minutes from Myrtle Beach. One enamored traveler decided to write a book about the so-called 'gateway to the southeast'. The book is available from the usual outlets. (Patch.com)
- Saint Frances Animal Center in Georgetown is offering free adoptions for all dogs and cats at their facility for the remainder of the month of June. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
