Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- "No one is coming to Myrtle Beach to stare at buildings" said one resident of River Oaks Golf Club in reaction to a proposal for 500 new single-family homes on the remaining 18 holes of the once popular course. The golf course is still open and it could take up to three years to approve the proposal and begin construction. Residents who chose to live at the golf course they enjoy so much are understandably upset. The Planning Commission met on Thursday to discuss the proposal. The commission has delayed any decision on the proposal until a public hearing is held in October. (WMBF) (wpde.com)
- The city of Myrtle Beach has put the finishing touches on a local historic cemetery on 21st Avenue North. The city acquired the property in 1992 in an effort to preserve the 243 graves that date back to the 1930s. New fencing, sod and landscaping were finished last week. Grave markers were repaired. The cemetery holds the graves of African-American military veterans from several wars. (wpde.com)
- According to a police report by North Myrtle Beach PD, a pregnant North Carolina woman, Kamiyah Belvin, was a passenger in an SUV traveling the wrong way on Highway 31 when she was killed in the crash in July. The driver of the Hyundai SUV, Shanika Tesha Jones of Supply, NC, was charged with reckless homicide. A couple in a Subaru Outback were taken to the hospital, as was Jones and another person in her vehicle. Jones was released from Long Detention Center on $5,000 bond after being booked into the facility on Friday. (WBTW)
- Murrells Inlet's favorite motorcycle bar, SBB, is holding a fundraiser today to benefit community member Roxanne Barber who was in remission from cervical cancer which has now returned. Barber is the daughter of SBB's former general manager and has been a part of the motorcycle community for years. The benefit will have music, raffles and silent auctions. today at SBB, 3393 Hwy 17 Business. (WBTW)
- It will be about three weeks until a Conway couple will be able to hold their 'miracle' triplets who were born 16 weeks early. The couple has been trying to start a family for about four years, and were shocked when they discovered they were expecting triplets. The babies each weigh less than two pounds apiece and were born on Monday — at 24 weeks. They are currently in a NICU and the new parents are staying positive. A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family with medical costs and supplies. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
