Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Myrtle Beach Fire Department has Tweeted that dangerous rip currents from Hurricane Sam are expected throughout today. The department warns in its beach hazard statement that beach-goers take extra precautions for the weekend. (WBTW)
- The well-known Steel Away 103-foot schooner has left Murrells Inlet to sail to her new home in Maine. The boat's original owner and builder, John Fazzio, says it took him 12 years to build the big boat, that has been a symbol of the Wacca Wache Marina for many years. For Fazzio, upkeep began to be challenging, so he put her up for sale. The boat has been re-named the Emma Todd, and will be used to conduct tours in Maine with new owner Steve Pagels' Downeast Windjammer Cruise Lines. (WPDE)
- Retired firefighter and veteran, Bill Ewe, was presented with a donated wheelchair from Grand Strand first responders and military supporters at a ceremony in Little River on Saturday. North Myrtle Beach Fire Rescue and Veterans Welcome Home Resource Center partnered together to give the chair to Ewe. (WMBF)
- The Horry County Coroner's Office is seeking the public's help in identifying a man who drowned in 2016 in a North Myrtle Beach hotel swimming pool. The man has been listed as a John Doe for five years, and investigators have run out of leads. Coroner Robert Edge said the man, who was found at Ocean Creek Plantation, had no ID or room key, and there were no signs of foul play. DNA and fingerprint tests have not found a match. (WBTW)
- ABC15's Ed Piotrowski, along with Horry County Sheriff's deputies, celebrated Grand Strand native Margaret Powell's 100th birthday on Friday. Powell has been a Loris resident for 82 years, and attributes her longevity to hard work — more specifically, working in the cornfields in town. Piotrowski, known for his "drive-by" birthday celebrations, quipped, "I hope I look as good as her when I turn 60! What a beautiful lady!" (WPDE)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
