Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- The Horry County Board of Education met on Monday to figure out how to keep the numbers of students in quarantine down, now that quarantines have dropped significantly since the start of the new academic year. The board is looking for a way to meet the demand for COVID-19 testing, and is talking to DHEC to set up testing sites at area schools. The issue is still being discussed, so no plans are in place yet. (WMBF)
- Meanwhile, Myrtle Beach area pediatricians are urging parents to consider getting flu shots for their children to avoid the potential of double infections of influenza and coronavirus in kids. DHEC is also concerned about a "twin-demic" because COVID-19 cases in children are rising and flu cases were so low last year while everyone was hand-washing, wearing masks, and social distancing. Pediatricians and DHEC anticipate medical facilities becoming overwhelmed again if there is a wave of both infections during flu season. (WBTW)
- Myrtle Beach firefighters held a rally on Tuesday against healthcare cuts. The event was dubbed Fairness for First Responders and included firefighters from Myrtle Beach, along with members of Professional Firefighters of South Carolina. Police officers and retirees also joined in at the gathering that was held at same time as the city council meeting. A new policy denying healthcare to retired first responders was the basis for the rally, and participants urged the committee to reconsider its policy. (wpde.com)
- A seat on the Board of Education is now empty after the death of Ray Winters last month. The District 3 term expires in 2022, so anyone appointed to fill that seat will hold their position through the election in November, 2022. The qualified person must reside in District 3 — Carolina Forest and Myrtle Beach — and will have until October 7th to apply for the position. The school board has to fill the seat no later than November 14, 2021, and plans to interview applicants, have an executive session, and vote on the appointment before November 8th. (WMBF)
- The South Carolina Department of Public Safety has released the name of a SC Highway Patrol trooper who fatally shot a suspect on Saturday. Master Trooper W.B. Benton of Highway Patrol Troop 5 was also injured during a struggle with the suspect. He was released from Conway Hospital, and will need surgery for those injuries at a later date. The person shot was transported to Grand Strand Medical Center where they later died. Benton is on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
