A quick check on Sunday's weather:
Mostly sunny and cooler. High: 62 Low: 45.
Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- A second arrest has been made in connection with the sexual assault and carjacking that occurred near Coastal Carolina University on Halloween. Conway Police took 16-year-old Mije Basnight into custody. He and another suspect were each charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, attempted murder, kidnapping, assault and battery, and armed robbery. (WMBF)
- Tip-based servers may be getting a long overdue pay raise because of a new rule passed by the Department of Labor. Grand Strand servers basically earn $2.13 per hour, and add in tips, but rarely earn the federal minimum wage. Servers get paid their hourly wage for preparation work, such as opening the restaurant before their shift begins, filling condiment jars, or washing dishes. The new rule will require servers to be compensated at minimum wage for non-tip-based tasks. (wpde.com)
- Horry County has purchased two acres of land near the intersection of Highways 90 and 22. County officials have confirmed that the land will be used for a new fire and EMS station for that neighborhood, which has been served by an all-volunteer crew for many years. The two volunteer stations at Wampee and Nixonville will be closed down when the new facility is built and staffed with full-time personnel. (Myhorrynews)
- Representative Todd Rutherford is sponsoring a bill to lower the South Carolina drinking age from 21 to 18, and some Myrtle Beach bar managers have expressed their views on the topic. Two local bar managers shared their opinions that 18-year-olds probably aren't mature enough to handle alcoholic beverage consumption. Rutherford pre-filed the bill on Wednesday. State lawmakers will review the proposed bill in January when the 2022 legislative session begins. (WMBF)
- Other bills pre-filed on Wednesday at the South Carolina House include some that were targeted to block COVID-19 mandates in the state. Representative Joe Bustos says he thinks most people believe that mandates are wrong. Lawmakers say South Carolinians shouldn't be faced with losing their jobs, or other freedoms, due to not getting the shots. The bill filed by Bustos would block employers from firing employees who refuse the shot, provided they previously had COVID or had received monoclonal therapy. The legislative session begins January 11th. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
