Happy Friday, people of Myrtle Beach! Here's everything you need to know about what's happening today on the Grand Strand.

Let's take a look at Friday's weather:

Breezy in the afternoon. High: 71 Low: 52.

Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Myrtle Beach Police, Horry County PD, the FBI, and Crimes Against Children Task Force used online resources in a prostitution investigation that led to the arrest of eight people this week. Agents went online and booked appointments to meet with prostitutes at a local hotel. The eight individuals arrested all live in the Myrtle Beach area. Most were charged with first offense prostitution. (WPDE)
  2. An Horry County grandmother has filed a lawsuit accusing a school security officer of putting a fourth grade student in a "chokehold." Mary Ellen Lashoones filed a suit against Horry County Schools after her 9-year-0ld grandson had a panic attack in class and was placed in an apparent "chokehold" by a school security guard. The child was injured, causing him to miss out on participating in school activities. The family has amassed extensive medical bills, and the child is afraid to go back to in-person learning. The lawsuit alleges that the officer used excessive force. (WBTW)
  3. As developers try to get approval to build on a Carolina Forest golf course for the third time, residents continue to express concern and aggravation. Retired police officer, Bernie Tomayko, attended a recent meeting about the project at the area's rec center, and says everyone who was present that day was "dead set against this" because that section of Myrtle Beach is already too congested. Members of Horry County Council are sensitive to the outcry and have rejected at least one proposal for rezoning, citing traffic and storm water issues. The council wants to do what's best for the community members. (Myhorrynews)
  4. Myrtle Beach firefighters are getting protective safety equipment that includes state-of-the-art features and cancer-preventative items. The equipment is arriving right before the holiday season, and is part of the city's cancer-free initiative. The gear is free of cancer-causing chemicals, but also includes extra layers of insulated, protective material, lumbar support with washable strapping, and built-in Bluetooth communication devices. (WBTW)
  5. Myrtle Beach leaders have approved a grant from Waccamaw Community Foundation to give Habitat for Humanity money for developing affordable housing and workforce housing in the city. There is a need for affordable housing, and the Waccamaw foundation collects donations from both Horry and Georgetown county donors, then assigns the funds to projects that need support. Habitat for Humanity will give recommendations for the plan at the end of January. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
