First, here's a glimpse at Thursday's weather:

Mixed clouds and sun with some scattered thunderstorms. High: 80 Low: 65.

Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. Horry County Schools has a message for parents — students coming to school with symptoms needs to stop. That's the message from HC Schools spokesperson, Lisa Bourcier, who says the fact that kids are showing up at school sick is a "major issue that needs to change". The schools are asking parents to fill out a daily home health screening checklist each morning, and keep the child home if they are experiencing symptoms. (WPDE)
  2. Redistricting meetings began Wednesday night at Horry-Georgetown Tech Conference Center in Myrtle Beach. A group of South Carolina house members from both parties will hold ten public meetings about redistricting. The need for discussions on the topic came after the 2020 Census showed a population explosion in Horry County. The subject does come up after most Census counts (every ten years), but this time the changes in growth are glaring. Future meetings will be held in-person and via Zoom, and the public is encouraged to attend. (WBTW)
  3. The Horry County Council has approved bonuses for county workers that will be paid to them this Friday. First responders, dispatchers and prison staff will receive $2,500 each, while other employees will get $1,500. Those hired after March 1, 2020 will receive a pro-rated amount with a minimum bonus of $250. The money came from American Rescue Plan funds. The group also discussed whether or not to use COVID-19 relief funding for other projects such as road improvements, including widening Highway 90. (MyHorryNews.com)
  4. Following up on a report from earlier this week, Christopher Skinner, the 40-year-old man who was found dead in a Yorkshire Parkway neighborhood pool, was a locally-known paralyzed motivational speaker. Skinner became paralyzed when he was a passenger in a car that was involved in a drunk-driving accident. He shared his spinal cord injury experience with young people to warn them about the dangers of drinking and driving. (WMBF)
  5. A woman involved in a fatal crash on Highway 90 on September 2nd has been arrested and charged with felony driving under the influence. The woman was driving a Nissan sedan and crossed the center line on Highway 90, crashing into a Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by 72-year-old Michael Allen of Galivants Ferry and New Jersey. Allen's motorcycle caught fire, and he was killed. The driver of the Nissan was ejected from her car. She was released on $30,000 bond on Sunday. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
