Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel temporarily closed all day Friday after there was a small, overnight fire on Thursday. No injuries were reported. In a Facebook post, the management of SkyWheel said there was a small fire on the property that damaged part of the loading deck and a nearby gondola. Friday was spent making repairs and getting inspections done. The LandShark Bar and Grill, and SurfShack were both open. (wpde.com)
- Firefighters were also called to a fire at the vacant Coral Sands Motel on Thursday night. The boarded up motel on North Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach has been the subject of a number of investigations, and was ordered to be demolished by MB City Council back in November when it became clear the owner was unable to make necessary repairs to bring the property up to code. The owner of the property filed an appeal to that order. Fire Capt. Jon Evans said a report about the fire will be released shortly. (WMBF)
- More details have emerged in the deadly shooting that happened in a home on Wachesaw Road in Murrells Inlet earlier this week. Deputies say that the suspect, James Charles Lewis, shot and killed James Thomas, and shot Thomas' daughter who was Lewis' ex-girlfriend. A sliding glass door to the home had been smashed, and there was an axe found on the ground near that door. Lewis was shot in the chest, and is in the hospital. Upon his release from the hospital, he will be charged with murder, attempted murder, first degree burglary, and domestic violence. (wpde.com)
- A body was found in Murrells Inlet in the waters at Morse Landing early Friday morning. Two fishermen from North Carolina spotted an empty kayak in the marsh and reported it to authorities. Georgetown County Sheriff's Office and other agencies discovered the body, identified later as 65-year-old Mark Ouellette of Murrells Inlet. Oullette was wearing a life jacket. An autopsy is scheduled for Saturday. (WMBF)
- The Horry County Sheriff's Office will host a recruitment event at an unusual location — its detention center. The event will be held on May 4 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Agility Course at Long Detention Center. The aim is to give job applicants an idea of what the job entails by holding the career fair on-site. The department is recruiting for line officers who would run the facility and they want to find as many qualified people as possible. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
