Socastee Buyout Woes + CareNow Clinics + Gospel Fest This Weekend

Catch up on everything happening around town today with the Myrtle Beach Daily.

(Patch Media)

Hey, Myrtle Beach! Here's everything you need to know to get this Thursday started off right.

First, today's weather: Partly cloudy with clear skies at night. Cooler. High: 83 Low: 66.

Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Homes in Socastee have flooded out many times in recent years, causing a "severe repetitive loss" on a number of properties. The new Socastee flood relocation buyout program started in July, and enrollment has been extended through this week. But the problem is, the buyouts aren't keeping up with soaring Myrtle Beach housing prices. This means the buyout is significantly less than what most of these homes are actually worth on the regular real estate market. (WBTW)
  2. Habitat for Humanity of Horry County is accepting applications for its Homebuyer Program that gives folks the chance to buy a Habitat for Humanity home with a 30-year, no interest mortgage. Certain limits apply, such as income amounts, a need-based qualification, and being an Horry County resident for at least one year. Qualified buyers must also volunteer with HFH and attend monthly homeowner meetings. (wpde.com)
  3. Seven clinics were purchased by CareNow Urgent Care in a re-branding of Grand Strand area immediate care centers. With the growth of Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand, convenient clinics offering medical services for non-life-threatening injuries and illness are needed more than ever. The facilities will also give area employers a place to send employees for occupational medical services such as pre-employment screenings, or treatments in workers' compensation cases. (WMBF)
  4. It's been a year since Coastal Sports Cards opened on Broadway Street in Myrtle Beach. The shop, geared toward sports card collectors, has seen great success. Patrons can not only browse to satisfy their card collecting hobby, they can also come in and watch TV or just stick around talking to each other and the staff of the shop. The store has other memorabilia including autographed helmets and hockey sticks, just to name a few. NBA star Spud Webb will be at the store signing autographs this Saturday, September 4th. 5. Myrtle Beach will host the third annual Myrtle Beach Waves of Praise Gospel Fest this weekend at Burroughs and Chapin Pavilion Place. Thousands are expected to attend the free event on Friday and Saturday. There will be games, food, and even free COVID-19 testing and shots. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
