Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- The first three property closings of the Socastee flood buyout program have completed, and ten more closings will happen over the next several weeks. More buyouts should be happening later this year. The structures on those properties will be demolished, and the land will become "open green space" with the possibility of using the space for parks and so forth in the future. (WBTW)
- The club that founded Atlantic Beach BikeFest is aiming to get the event back to its original purpose, according to Aaron Cox, business manager for Carolina Knight Riders. Everyone is welcome at the event known by many as Black Bike Week — a moniker Cox says has never been used by Carolina Knight Riders. The group is working with the town government of Atlantic Beach to coordinate parades, charity rides, fundraisers and toy rides for kids in need. Organizers want people to come out this weekend and celebrate. The first BikeFest happened in 1980. - Grand Strand Action Together organized a vigil in Myrtle Beach on Thursday night to honor the 21 victims of Tuesday's mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas. The vigil was led by Caitlin Czeh who is a survivor of the Virginia Teach mass shooting in 2007. The group has also scheduled an event on June 3 at the SkyWheel to recognize National Gun Violence Awareness Day. (WBTW) The SkyWheel itself was lit up in maroon and white, Robb Elementary School's colors. (WACH.com)
- The coroner's office has confirmed the identity of the inmate who died after being found unresponsive in their cell at J. Reuben Long Detention Center. Destiny Ball of Conway was 27 years old. SLED is investigating and an autopsy was performed but results are not yet available. Ball was in prison for shoplifting and failure to appear in court. (WBTW)
- Surfside Beach K9 officer Sif helped make a significant drug arrest, underscoring the importance of having trained canines on the police force. The dog's handler, Cpl. Pinto was given a positive alert signal by the dog, leading officers to make an arrest for trafficking of methamphetamine, heroin and crack cocaine. SSPD said on its Facebook page, "We encourage all drug dealers to bypass The Family Beach!" (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
