(Patch Media)

Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. The city of Myrtle Beach is considering a pay increase to attract new city workers. There are 169 open positions and Mayor Bethune says it's been challenging trying to hire employees. The city needs to make the jobs more attractive, and a study done recently shows that it is lagging behind the local job market as far as pay is concerned. City staff will present a pay increase proposal for budget approval. (WBTW)
  2. Leaders at the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce say they doubt gas prices will impact the spring tourism season. Half of the city's hotel rooms were already booked by the end of February, according to the city's lodging dashboard. The Chamber remains confident that the Grand Strand is still an affordable and family-friendly destination, regardless of whether visitors arrive by automobile or airplane. (WPDE)
  3. Many libraries changed the way they provided services during the pandemic to maintain a level of safety. In-person library visits may become a thing of the past. A book vending machine is coming to Horry County libraries after a $30,000 grant was received to fund the purchase of the machine. 300 items will be held in the machine, and users would scan their library card, open the door, and choose their book(s). No word yet on when the machine will arrive, or where it will be located. (WBTW)
  4. An Horry County man whose childhood home is in Ukraine, watched from here as his mother, sister, and nephew escaped the warzone. Now his family is among more than two million refugees who fled Ukraine as Russian troops moved in to take over their cities. Vadym Psymennyi said his mother "packed all of [her] life in one suitcase," and the family had to leave his brother-in-law behind because men in his age group must stay behind to help defend the country. The family was able to board a train to Poland — a trip of about 24 hours — and safely cross the border. (wpde.com)
  5. Myrtle Beach rideshare drivers and business owners are sounding off and feeling the pinch as inflation and gas prices put a crimp in their 2022 plans. Uber drivers and Lyft drivers are having to grapple with the cost of filling up their vehicles every day for their jobs. One local driver presented an idea to Uberadd a temporary fuel surcharge to help manage the problem for drivers and customers. No word yet on whether Uber will consider the idea. (WMBF) Grand Strand restaurants and seafood markets are feeling the blow, too. They have to pay more to keep some fish items on the menu, mainly those items that are delivered by truck. Similar to the Uber idea, freight trucking companies have fuel surcharges, and other types of delivery charges added on to the bill. That, and other price adjustments to offset inflation, has to be passed along to consumers. (WMBF)

  • Surfside Beach town council is looking to bring back Surfside open-air markets, with more of a meaning: donate the proceeds. Last year's markets were successful. This year, My Olive Shack will be the market host, and it will donate all proceeds to Meals On Wheels. The markets will start in April and operate through November. (wpde.com)
  • ICYMI: Atlantic Beach Bikefest is on for Memorial Day weekend, and Town Council also voted to ban open carry of firearms during this festival, and all other festivals in Atlantic Beach. (MyHorryNews.com)
  • Using an Apple AirTag tracking device inside a suitcase, writing a couple of posts on Myrtle Beach social media groups, and a coincidental connection to a Delta Airlines staffer, helped one traveler from Boston get reunited with her missing luggage! (wpde.com)
  • Horry County is seeking grant money from the SC Department of Public Safety to hopefully bring a new violent crime prosecution team to the 15th Circuit Court Solicitor's Office. Solicitor Jimmy Richardson says if approved, the grant money would go toward hiring an additional prosecutor, investigator, and administrative assistant. He added that most violent crimes are complex, difficult, and take a long time to get to trial. (WBTW)

That's it for Friday, Grand Strand. See you all Saturday morning for another edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily!

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
