Here are the top four stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. A helicopter with only the pilot on board made a precautionary landing on the beach near Springmaid Pier on Wednesday according to the FAA. The copter's engine warning light illuminated while the pilot was flying near the Nash Street public beach access, just south of the pier, around noon Wednesday. The Robinson R44 II aircraft is registered to the helicopter tour agency, Executive Helicopters, Inc. of North Myrtle Beach. Beachgoers said seeing that made for one heck of a beach day! The copter was removed from the beach and taken away on a trailer. (wpde.com) (WBTW)
  2. The widow of slain tourist Joshua Wilson wants justice for her husband's murder. Joshua Wilson of West Virginia was shot while on vacation in Myrtle Beach on July 5. Wilson was on life support for several days, and his wife Staci stayed with him until he died. Staci Wilson says the family stopped at a gas station where a man asked Joshua for a ride. Joshua gave that man a ride, but later on was chased by a different man who shot him several times. The shooter is in custody, charged with murder. (wpde.com) (WMBF)
  3. Parents are hoping Horry County school district will rethink its decision to disallow school buses from entering gated communities. HCS posted its new policy in a social media post, but later clarified its position, stating that buses would enter gated communities as long as "dedicated security personnel or an approved plan to operate inside the gates was in place" for each of those communities. Waiting outside of gates, which would be the solution for many students, was deemed unsafe by community members who spoke out against the decision. (WBTW)
  4. Doc Antle was arraigned in federal court in Florence, South Carolina on Wednesday. He pled not guilty to money laundering and wildlife trafficking. Antle was indicted on ten counts, including trafficking of lemurs, cheetahs and a chimpanzee. He left no comment for reporters. (wpde.com)

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
