Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Construction work brought some smoke inside St. James Middle School and delayed the start of the school day for everyone on Friday morning. There was no fire at the school. The fire department arrived on the scene, checked out the building and gave the all-clear around 8:45 a.m. Some parents ended up not dropping off their students during the lengthy delay. Any absences on Friday will be excused, said the school's principal. (WBTW)
- A Myrtle Beach man who owns Short Stop convenience store was arrested for tax evasion on Friday. Arrest warrants indicate he underreported taxable sales from 2018 through 2021. He is being held without bond at Long Detention Center and could face up to five years in prison and/or a fine of $10,000, plus court costs for each of four counts. (wpde.com)(WBTW)
- One in 900,000 — those are the odds of winning the top prize in the Carolina Gold 100X lottery. One Grand Strand man did just that after purchasing the winning ticket at a Circle K gas station. The winner says he'll share the prize with his daughter and he also wants to buy himself a new car. (WMBF) (wpde.com)
- The CCU Chanticleer Regiment marching band is going to London! The band will march in the 2023 London New Year's Day Parade. The announcement was made in a press release on Friday. More than 90 student band members will be performing for huge crowds in London. Chauncey the mascot, whose character is derived from Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" is also going along for the ride. The parade will be viewable online. (wpde.com)
- About 100 Garden City residents attended a multi-day workshop this week to give input on the flood-prone community's Garden City Streetscape Project. Horry County leaders invited the residents to weigh in on what they want from the new infrastructure project. Residents overwhelmingly identified better drainage systems, more parking spaces and safer crosswalks as the key items on their list of things that need improvement. The project will focus on Waccamaw Drive from Melody Lane to the county line, then from Atlantic Avenue east of the marsh back to Waccamaw Drive. The final design plans should begin in a couple months. Anyone who missed the meeting may provide feedback online. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
