🌱 Stephen Flood Hospitalized + Bikers Undeterred By Gas Prices

Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. One day after being sentenced to 18 years in prison for the drowning deaths of Wendy Newton and Nicolette Green, former Horry County deputy, Stephen Flood, 70, has been hospitalized. Flood complained of chest pains and was admitted to the hospital. When he is released from the hospital, he will be brought to Marion County Detention Center. (wpde.com)
  2. PETA is urging the IRS and the state of South Carolina to investigate Bhagavan Antle's non-profit organization associated with the Myrtle Beach Safari roadside zoo. Antle, sometimes known as "Doc," is accused by PETA to be using charitable donations to fund the zoo. PETA is asking the IRS to investigate and revoke the non-profit's tax-exempt status, among other suggested actions against Antle. (WIS News 10)
  3. The XCON Comic Convention is back in Myrtle Beach this weekend, and the first ever Georgetown Food, Beer and Wine Festival is happening on the south Strand! The comic convention is a two-day event featuring a silent auction to benefit Cancer Heroes of the Carolinas. (wpde.com) The Georgetown event is happening Saturday, and features food, beer, wine and live music along with family-friendly activities for all ages. (wpde.com)
  4. Between gas prices, diesel prices and dairy costs, the owners of Mister Softee ice cream have announced a price increase beginning June 1. Serina Regan, owner of the Horry County franchise says she waited as long as possible before making the difficult decision to raise prices. Loyal customers mean the world to Regan, who believes her prices are still lower than Mister Softee franchises in other parts of the country. (WBTW)
  5. It's the final weekend of the Myrtle Beach Spring Bike Rally, and thousands of bikers are in town, despite gasoline prices hitting record highs here and everywhere else. Even with prices exceeding $4.50 a gallon, with no sign of relief, folks have come into the Strand from all over the east coast. GasBuddy says prices are up because of supply shortages and several refineries being closed down. (WMBF)

  • Officials with S.C.U.T.E. are asking beachgoers in Garden City to give loggerhead sea turtle nests a wide berth after what was believed to be a false crawl ended up resulting in the discovery of three active loggerhead nests. (wpde.com)
  • Beginning June 2, the new Illumination Park at The Hangout Restaurant, Broadway at the Beach, will premiere. The curated art experience is free, and will display world-class artwork. (wpde.com)
  • The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: A kitten was seen running around the parking lot of NMB Aquatic & Fitness Center earlier this week. After evading an officer and becoming trapped up under a car, the HSNMB team headed over to help rescue the feline who is currently too young to be adopted. (Facebook)
  • A former Horry County fire District Chief will be the new Fire Chief in Georgetown County starting on May 31. Chief Jim Falkenhagen has over 30 years of fire and EMS service. (WCBD News 2)

  • Reader and good friend Marie S. gave me a heads' up on the status of the Barefoot Swing Bridge. The motor and gear box have apparently been repaired and installed. Testing will be conducted over the next few days, and if all goes according to plan, the bridge should resume normal operations on Monday, May 23.
