Here are the top four stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Heavy rain and thunderstorms caused roadway flooding and knocked out power to hundreds in Horry County on Sunday afternoon. The right lane of Highway 17 was flooded in North Myrtle Beach and low-lying areas such as Cherry Grove had flooding as well. The storm delivered some much-needed rain. It was all from a slow-moving cold front that will hopefully bring some relief with lowered temperatures. Power was mostly restored by early evening. (WBTW)
- Myrtle Beach State Park officials say sea turtle hatchling season is here, and they're offering some tips for beachgoers on what to do, and not do, when baby turtles are making their way to the ocean. Don't leave trash or holes on the beach when you go home. Cover holes, and pick up your trash. Don't aid the turtles in finding their way — this is not helpful. If you're on the beach at night, do not use bright flashlights. The best thing you can do is avoid the little babies, clean up after yourselves and let the turtles navigate to the ocean naturally. - Myrtle Beach Fire Department is in the news today as its hockey team will compete against Baltimore City Fire Department for charity, and some local children hosted a fundraiser for the department. There are 25 players on the MBFD hockey team, and they practice in Charleston and Wilmington because there is no rink nearby. The game will be on August 20 at Wilmington Ice House. (WMBF) The department got some support on Sunday from two local kids who made lemonade and set up a stand, and even had cookies for the firefighters. All proceeds from the lemonade stand will go to the MBFD Ocean Rescue team. (wpde.com)
- Two Coastal Carolina University students showcased Horry Country's history with the Korean War through the eyes of a missing soldier at Horry County Museum recently. The Korean War is often dubbed "The Forgotten War." Grad student Brogan Will and another student, Nicholas Gallagher, both Prince Fellows at the university, did a lot of research for the project. They focused on MSgt. Ernest Grainger, an Horry County soldier who was missing in action until his remains were found after 63 years. The students would like to share this local history with high school students in the classroom. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
