Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Surfside Beach Town Council approved a new parking expansion on 13th Avenue South. The council voted 4-3 to make the area a paid parking lot. The lot will be located between Ocean Boulevard and Dogwood Drive, and will give beachgoers more options for parking in the beachside community. One council member wants to see more studies done on the town's parking situation and therefore voted against the proposal. (WBTW)
- Fire officials in Surfside Beach say the fire at Neal and Pam's Bar and Grill originated in an air blower, but they are not sure exactly how the fire started. The blower, similar to an air-conditioning unit, caught fire and spread to the rest of the building. Inventory and furnishings inside the restaurant were destroyed by fire, smoke and water. The full timeline of the fire investigation as well as the reopening of the restaurant is unclear. (WBTW) (WMBF) (wpde.com)
- A 41-year-old Myrtle Beach man was killed Tuesday afternoon in a single-vehicle wreck. Mark Gasque was driving on SC 707 near Bay Road when his vehicle crossed the center line, went off the road and crashed into a culvert pipe. Horry County Fire Rescue used extrication tools to retrieve Gasque from the vehicle. He was brought to Grand Strand Medical Center where he later died of his injuries. (MyHorryNews.com) (WBTW)
- This week a sea turtle laid 121 eggs on the beach in the city of Myrtle Beach. The Sea Turtle Program Volunteers relocated the nest to a safer location. Since May approximately 30 nests have been marked and relocated inside the City of Myrtle Beach. (WMBF) (Myrtle Beach Police Department via Facebook)
- Looks like 2022 is the year of unusual animal sightings on Grand Strand beaches! This time, beachgoers spotted a rattlesnake in the surf at Myrtle Beach State Park. The Snake Chaser, Russell Cavender, received a call from MBSP asking him to come remove the rattler and relocate it elsewhere. Cavender said the snake is a canebrake (timber) rattlesnake, and that it should be avoided because it is highly venomous. Cavender released the reptile in a rural, swampy area of Horry County. Today's pic of the day comes from reader Dee Cochran who got a shot of folks on the beach in North Myrtle looking for shells and shark teeth at night, under the light of the full moon! Thanks for the fun photo, Dee!

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
