Here are the 5 top stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. The owner of Surfside Beach's Good Day Café was injured in a hit-and-run the day after opening the doors to the needy. On Christmas Day, Kevin Andrews provided warm meals to community members in need. The following day, his car was hit and totaled, and he broke his hand in the crash. The driver who hit his car left the scene and witnesses were not able to see the license plate. The café is closed until January 11th. (wpde.com)
  2. The popular Winter Wonderland at the Beach ran into an interesting problem on Monday — the outside temperature was too high! The event, in its first year, had to adjust the start time of Monday's ice skating and light show. Instead of opening at the usual start time of 3:00 p.m., crews needed to deal with warm temps, wind, and salt air, delaying opening until 5:00 p.m. The weather forecast shows unseasonably warm conditions right through the event's closing day of January 2nd! (WBTW)
  3. The Beach Ball Classic basketball tournament kicked off Monday afternoon at Myrtle Beach Convention Center. This year marks 41 years for the annual tourney that brings elite high school hoop players to the Grand Strand from across the United States. The Myrtle Beach High School boys team will not compete this year due to a COVID-19 outbreak. (WMBF)
  4. If you want to know where to ring in the New Year on the Grand Strand, check out this list. From Pawleys to North Myrtle there's a place to go for fireworks, parties, celebrations and the famous Southern Times Square at Market Common. (wpde.com)
  5. Myrtle Beach International Airport reported that there were no complications at MYR regarding cancellations or delays during the Christmas weekend. The airport was busy, with long lines for TSA and lots of traffic going to and from the area. Flights departing MYR this Christmas season are up 73% as compared to the holiday season of 2020. (WMBF)

You're officially in the loop for Tuesday. See you all Wednesday morning for another update as we ride this winter heat wave toward 2022!

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
