🌱 Surfside Man's Sentence Commuted By Biden + Free Fishing Clinics

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Myrtle Beach.

(Patch Media)

Rise and shine, Myrtle Beach! Let's get this Wednesday started. Today is April 27, 2022, and here's everything happening around town today.

First, let's look at today's weather:

Not as warm. High: 72 Low: 50.

Here are the top four stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. A Surfside Beach man is one of 75 prisoners whose sentences were commuted by the Biden administration on Tuesday. Vincent Edward Kennedy of Surfside had been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a non-violent drug offense in 2014. Kennedy will be released from prison on April 26, 2023, and will serve the rest of his sentence under home confinement. An additional 10 years of supervised release was added to his sentence in 2014, and that will remain in effect as well. The released prisoners will have job training and other programs available. (WBTW)
  2. Leaders in Myrtle Beach voted in favor of applying for a grant for a new emergency communication system for the city. The new system would alert residents about major emergencies, severe weather, active shooters, power outages, and boil water advisories, among other messages. The new technology would enable authorities to target customizable messages to neighborhoods and people most affected. Residents would sign up for the alerts. Right now, it is just in the inquiry stage, to see if the city will be awarded the grant. (WMBF)
  3. An investigation has begun concerning the disappearance of ducks that were living near the Ivystone apartments in Socastee. The SC Department of Natural Resources said residents have complained that the ducks have been disappearing from the ponds around the apartment complex. Carolina Wildlife Rehabilitation Center reported that seven ducks were pulled from the ponds over the last four days, and all seven died. The cause of the deaths is not clear. (WBTW)
  4. Want to learn about saltwater fishing? Then you're in luck, because the SC Department of Natural Resources is hosting several free saltwater fishing clinics on the Grand Strand in coming weeks. Anyone wishing to attend must sign up in advance, must be 16 years of age or older, and must have a valid South Carolina saltwater fishing license. The first clinic is happening April 28 at North Inlet-Winyah Bay NERR in Georgetown. See article for specifics. All clinics will be held rain or shine. (Myhorrynews)

Myrtle Beach pic of the day:

Wednesday's pic of the day comes from reader Bernice Cegielski, who captured morning sunrise at Myrtle Beach State Park. Thanks for the gorgeous photo, Bernice!

Today in Myrtle Beach:

  • NASA Ambassador Mr. Ron on Our Moon and Others @ Surfside Beach Library (2:00 PM)
  • Digger T @ Star Tavern (5:00 PM)
  • Karaoke and Wiener Wednesday @ Captain Archie's (6:00 PM)
  • Nick Andolora @ Bubba's Love Shak (6:30 PM)

From my notebook:

  • The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: Living in a shelter is stressful and overwhelming for dogs like Lola. They have no privacy from each other and grasp for moments of relaxation. Saturday, April 30, some of our community's animal allies will be locked in our kennels to stand up for Lola and other animals in-need. We are calling on all animal lovers to donate towards our lock-in participants' "adoption fees" to support our mission of saving and caring for the homeless animals in our community. They long for safety, comfort and love, and they depend on your support! (Facebook)
  • Grand Strand Humane Society is having a FREE cat adoption event at Tanger Outlet on Highway 501 this weekend. Many of the shelter's cats have been at the shelter for more than six months. Anyone who adopts one of these cats gets three months of flea prevention and a bag of goodies. The event will be Saturday, April 30, and Sunday, May 1 starting at 10 a.m. at the shelter's temporary location behind Tanger Outlets across from Carolina Pottery. (wpde.com)
  • All of the Grand Strand shelters are full of adoptable dogs and cats needing furever homes. In addition to the two Humane Societies, the folks at All About Animals, Head Butt Hotel, and Kind Keeper are all represented on this list of pets needing homes. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
  • Another local retired K-9 officer has died. Alli was on the K-9 team with the MBPD for many years, along with her partner and handler Lt. Chris Smith who posted a beautiful tribute on the department's Facebook page. (WBTW)
  • Myrtle Beach Area Chamber Of Commerce: Surfwater Promotions was named April Leading Business Of The Month by South State Bank. The company makes customized promo items such as banners, signs, and wraps. Surfwater is located in Surfside Beach and has been in business since 1997. (Press Release Desk)
  • A handful of single-family homes, and a couple of condos are featured in this week's latest Myrtle Beach area real estate roundup, courtesy of Redfin and Patch. (Myrtle Beach Patch)

Thanks for following along and staying informed this Wednesday! See you Thursday morning for another edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily.

Kathy Mandell

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
