Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. The community is mourning the death of Surfside Beach resident Tammy Perreault who was killed in freak accident at a Garden City beach on Wednesday. Perreault was struck and impaled by a beach umbrella that had been blown around by strong wind gusts. She was brought to the emergency room where she died from chest trauma. Off-duty medical personnel and bystanders provided initial medical care on the beach until first responders arrived on scene from several departments. Perreault was 63 years old. The management of Scotty's Beach Bar posted on social media that Tammy Perreault was their friend and asked for prayers for her family. (wpde.com) (WMBF)
  2. At least 55 animals were adopted from Horry County Animal Care Center in one day after it was announced that the organization took in about 130 animals from police investigations and was overwhelmed. The shelter expressed gratitude to the community for stepping forward and helping its cause. Tamroc Kennels on Bush Drive is helping out by housing a number of dogs for HCACC to help ease the overcrowding situation. HCACC animals can be adopted from Tamroc at no charge. The center is charging an adoption fee for the small dogs and farm animals that are being adopted directly from the center on Industrial Park Drive. (WBTW) (WMBF)
  3. There is more information on that drug sales investigation that saw increased police activity including a SLED helicopter near the Blue Street and Orange Avenue neighborhood just off Mr. Joe White Avenue earlier this week. Police have arrested nine individuals on various charges including trafficking of heroin, possession with intent to distribute controlled substances and loitering for harmful purpose. Eight of the suspects are in their early 20s and one juvenile was charged as well. The suspects are from Myrtle Beach, Socastee and Conway. (WMBF)
  4. Horry County School Board chairman Ken Richardson's chairmanship will be ending at the close of 2022. He will be replaced by David Cox. Before passing the baton to Cox, Richardson wants to make sure students get a traditional school year after the last several years were marred by hurricanes and coronavirus. Richardson met with new teachers hired by the district and he looks forward to having spectators in the stands at football games, too. School safety is also one of Richardson's primary goals during his final year with the board. (WMBF)
  5. Within the next 30 days, Horry County will be closing on the purchase of approximately 500 acres for the purpose of an equestrian center and rural civic center. The County Council is spending over $4 million on the land deal with funding coming from various sources including Horry Electric Cooperative. The exact parcel of land has not been identified. The facility will include an arena, show rings, paddocks, fields, stalls, riding trails, camping and meeting spaces and other recreational spaces for various uses. (Myhorrynews)

  • The town of Surfside Beach extended the use of mobility mats at beach access pathways to help wheelchair users and people with mobility issues. The mats now extend past the dune line at the 3rd Avenue South beach entrance. The organization that helped place the mats, Adaptive Surf Project, wants to do more and hopes to work with the city to add more mats in the area. (WMBF)
  • SCDOR has announced that some South Carolina state taxpayers may receive a tax rebate by the end of 2022. Approximately $1 billion in state rebates will be issued to taxpayers who meet eligibility requirements given in the link here: (wpde.com)
  • Myrtle Beach International Airport: Get to know therapy dog Ling Ling from the airport's P.E.T.S Program. She's a Pekingese/Shih Tzu mix and her birthday is coming up in September. Ling Ling lives in Loris and her favorite snack is dried duck treats. She loves going for RIDES in her golf cart. Maybe you'll see Ling Ling the next time you travel through MYR. That's it for Friday, everybody! I'll be in your inbox Saturday with your weekend edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily.

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
