Here are the top four stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- Late Monday afternoon, Myrtle Beach Police responded to a call to investigate a 'suspicious item' near Futrell Park. MBPD responded to a residence on Futrell Drive and stayed on-scene while the investigation proceeded. They eventually cleared the area. People affected were moved to a safe zone and MBPD says the area is now safe. There are no details as to what the suspicious item may have been. (WMBF) (WBTW) (wpde.com)
- Also on Monday afternoon, Myrtle Beach Fire Department says a woman encountered "some type of marine life" in the ocean near 75th Avenue in Myrtle Beach. Witnesses say a woman was bitten on the arm and came out of the water on her own. Ocean rescue assisted the woman and brought her somewhere away from the beach. There are no additional details. - Horry County Schools' first day of classes resembled the most normal first day of school in two years. All students and teachers are doing in-person learning because the county is no longer offering online learning. Masks are no longer required and meals are being taken in the cafeteria. Plexiglass dividers in classrooms were taken down allowing students to sit close to each other again. Teachers and staff welcomed students and are excited to educate Horry County's youngsters by providing an engaging learning experience. WMBF)
- Several local businesses stepped up to sponsor pet adoptions through North Myrtle Beach Humane Society from now through the end of August. NMBHS announced on Monday that Anderson Brothers Bank, Plantation Realty Group, Elliott Coastal Living, Atlantic Heating & Cooling and Murray Law Offices are covering all adoption fees for the rest of the month in a "clear the shelter" campaign. Now is the time to adopt a furry family member — for free — and help the overcrowded shelter in the process. (WMBF) (The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach via Facebook)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
