Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Today is the last day to pay delinquent taxes on "distressed property." That includes boats, autos, mobile homes, personal property, and real estate that have overdue tax bills. Payment will avoid those properties becoming part of the 2021 Tax Sale that starts tomorrow! Delinquent tax bills must be paid by 5:00 p.m. today whether in person, by phone, or online. (Press Release Desk) Additional information: (HorryCounty.org)
  2. Police haven't released much information, but officers were called to Fantasy Harbor Boulevard early Sunday morning regarding a shooting that happened overnight. The report says that one man is dead, but there were no other details. (WBTW)
  3. A 38-year-old motorcyclist from Murrells Inlet was killed when he drove his 2003 Harley-Davidson across the median on Highway 17 near Hilton Road, and struck a curb. The man, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the bike and died at the scene, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol. The Deputy County Coroner has identified the man as Benjamin Boyle, originally from Cleveland, Ohio. (Myhorrynews) (WPDE)
  4. In the mood for a residential Christmas light show? Then you might want to check out the Weaver family's house in Garden City. The Weavers say anyone who wants to stop by and view the extravaganza can, at 534 Pine Avenue, across from Garden City Baptist Church. The family put up more than 200,000 lights in what's described as a one-of-a-kind light show! They started the tradition about 12 years ago with "only" 42,000 lights. They have dancing trees, programmed music, and several scenes set up on the property. The labor of love took 10-12 hours a day for a whole month to set up! (WBTW)
  5. Conway's Whittemore Elementary School opened in 1954 and was known as an "equalization school" in South Carolina, which meant only African-American students were taught there at the time. The school's building is slated to be demolished, but some residents and alumni would like to see the building preserved because of its historical value, especially to Black community members. The building was seriously damaged during Hurricane Matthew in 2016, and was condemned in 2020. Repairs would cost around $20 million. A date has not been determined for demolition. Residents who want to see the landmark preserved would like to see it renovated and used as a community center. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
