Here are the top five stories in Myrtle Beach today:

  1. The family of a man who was at one time a suspect in Brittanee Drexel's disappearance and murder is seeking an apology from the FBI. Timothy Taylor was "pursued relentlessly for years" said his mother, Joanna. Timothy's name and reputation were ruined from false allegations made against him. He was never charged with a crime. The Taylor family was in the courtroom this week at Raymond Moody's hearing. Fifteenth Circuit Solicitor, Jimmy Richardson said that it would not be appropriate for him to apologize because federal authorities pursued Taylor. Timothy Taylor did not speak to the media after Moody's hearing. The FBI issued a statement that did not include an apology to Taylor. (WMBF)
  2. Spirit Airlines is one of the largest air service providers operating in and out of Myrtle Beach International Airport and there's huge news from the company. Spirit has approved a $3.8 billion sale of the company to JetBlue Airways. Frontier Airlines was in a bidding war with JetBlue over the sale, but JetBlue took the winning bid. Spirit shareholders did approve the buyout, but the deal could be challenged by federal antitrust regulators. Stay tuned! (WMBF)
  3. Market Walk at Market Common is a proposed new project located on the north side of Farrow Parkway near the intersection of Phillis Boulevard. The 15-acre subdivision would consist of 129 townhouses, 80 cottage homes, a dog park, amenity center, pool, playground and lake pavilion. The proposal is part of the Market Common Master Plan. 4. Myrtle Beach officials are considering allowing tents and "Shibumi Shades" on the beach as an alternative to beach umbrellas after the tragic accidental death of a Surfside Beach woman over the summer. Each of the shading devices pose safety concerns in various different ways. The bottom line is that people need shading devices on the beach during the summer season. The Beach Advisory Committee is still working on a proposal to send to Myrtle Beach City Council. (wpde.com) (WMBF)
  5. Surfside Beach town officials say that a stop-work order was issued erroneously because of rumors and poor information. The Town Administrator said there were rumors that improper permitting and licensing had been given, when in fact two similarly-named construction companies caused a miscommunication in the permitting department. Consensus Construction had the correct permits. Someone mixed up that company's name with another business, Consensus Building, said the Town Administrator. The stop order was lifted and work on the pier has resumed. (WBTW)

  • Arson dogs got a training session in Myrtle Beach this week. The fire-sniffing canines came from all around the U.S. and Canada. Three of the dogs live right here on the Grand Strand. Labrador retrievers and "goldadors" have a particular knack for distinguishing odors at fire scenes, so all the dogs being trained were those breeds. The pooches live with their handlers at home and are trained using food rewards. (wpde.com)
  • The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: "We are taking pre-orders for the 2023 Paw Prints Calendar! Get yours now because these calendars WILL sell out! Pre-ordered calendars will be mailed out as soon as the shipment arrives." (The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach via Facebook)

  • A North Myrtle Beach veteran is using his art and military experience to help the people of Ukraine. George Widener was diagnosed with PTSD after serving in the military years ago. He started drawing as a way to relieve stress. Widener found an opportunity to help the people of Ukraine by combining his experience with war and his art collection to raise funds. (wpde.com)

You're all caught up for Friday, everybody! See you tomorrow morning for your Saturday edition of the Myrtle Beach Daily.

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
