Good morning, neighbors! It's me again, Kathy Mandell, your host of the Myrtle Beach Daily. It's Thursday, October 7, 2021 and here's what's happening on the Grand Strand.

First, today's weather:

A t-storm around in the a.m.. High: 80 Low: 70.

Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:

  1. Tidelands Health is looking to build a new rehab hospital in the Carolina Bays neighborhood. The "hospital within a hospital" will provide in-patient rehabilitation to south Horry County, and would be located within the planned Tidelands Health Carolina Bays Hospital. The 36-bed facility will be built near the interchange of Highways 31 and 707. A 22-bed long-term acute care facility is also awaiting approval within the same complex. (WMBF)
  2. Tidelands is also making news as the first hospital in South Carolina to perform brain tumor biopsy surgery using cranial robotics technology. An 88-year-old seizure patient in Murrells Inlet received the 75-minute biopsy by neurosurgeon Dr. Oluwaseun Omofoye. The technology will allow neurosurgery patients to be able to stay close to home, and is much less invasive than previous biopsy procedures. Post-biopsy, this patient was able to regain some function in their left arm because some tissue was able to be removed during the biopsy. (WCBD News 2)
  3. Two local law enforcement departments are grieving the losses of their four-legged colleagues. Horry County Police Department's K-9 officer, Josie, a bloodhound, died from a medical emergency. Josie served the department since 2018. (WBTW). In Georgetown , the police department is mourning the loss of four-legged officer Liza, a German shepherd dog, who had a terminal illness. Liza was with Georgetown PD since 2015. (WMBF)
  4. Horry County leaders are going back to the drawing board as they try to find path forward to develop I-73 and improve Highway 90. The cities of Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach are on board with the project that will cost about $350 million in local funds. But other Horry County decision makers are not ready to commit. The main issue is the continuing concern about Highway 90 and public safety as the population swells. The conversation will continue at the next council meeting. (wpde.com)
  5. The Myrtle Beach Planning Commission rejected a request made by a local property owner to allow curb cuts in the Cabana District between the 5400 and 5700 blocks of North Ocean Boulevard. Property owners say parking is limited, and cabana owners have to walk because vehicles are otherwise forced to drive over curbing, which is not allowed. The area is described as a very special place, and is busy all the time, so while the Commissioners are sympathetic to the issues, they cannot see their way clear to having unrestricted parking in the area. (WBTW)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
