Tinder Date Gone Wrong+ GoFund Homeless Man+ 5K Runners Wanted
Your five-minute guide to everything worth knowing around town today.

Welcome back, Grand Strand readers! Here's everything you need to know to get this Tuesday started off right. Here's everything happening today in Myrtle Beach. The Treasurer's office will halt in-person transactions due to COVID-19, a police standoff and arrest of a fugitive happens after a Tinder date goes wrong, a homeless man gets help from the community, students go back-to-school with new air filtration systems in place, and lace up people — a 5K fundraiser this coming weekend needs more participants.
Let's look at today's weather: Rain and humid throughout the day. High: 83 Low: 78.
Here are the top stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- The Horry County Treasurer's Office will stop face-to-face interactions in its office starting today until further notice. The office announced the decision on Facebook Monday, and cited the rise in COVID-19 cases as its inability to fully staff the office. Drive-thru locations in Little River, Conway and the South Strand will be operating, and the Myrtle Beach office has an outdoor drop box that will be checked throughout each day. Payments may also be made online. (WMBF)
- A police standoff that lasted several hours Sunday afternoon on University Forest Drive, resulted in a Myrtle Beach man being arrested. The man was considered a fugitive related to a case in Pennsylvania where he ran from police. Police were asked to do a welfare check at the home on University Forest Drive, and encountered the suspect who had been on a Tinder date with the home's occupant. The occupant had texted a friend indicating that she was in an unsafe situation. (WPDE)
- After a well-known Myrtle Beach homeless man was attacked and beaten on South Kings Highway near the McDonald's recently, a local woman has created a GoFundMe account to help him recover from his injuries which include a broken back that requires surgery. There has been a huge outpouring in donations. (WBTW)
- Students in Horry County go back to school today, in an almost back-to-normal format. Officials spent the summer installing ionization air filtration systems in 15 county school buildings. Additional systems are being installed throughout the county school system, for a total of 5,000 systems when the $7 million project is complete. (WPDE)
- The annual 5K fundraiser for Children's Recovery Center is happening this Saturday, August 21, in Murrells Inlet, starting at Morse Park. The event still needs runners to participate and raise funds, even though it has raised around $37,000 in sponsorships. The money helps abused and neglected children in Horry and Georgetown counties. The run begins at 8:00 a.m., and there is a one-mile fun run at 7:30. (wpde.com)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
