First, today's weather:
Humid; a shower in the a.m.. High: 77 Low: 65.
Here are the top stories in Myrtle Beach today:
- A 3-vehicle crash near the entrance of Brookgreen Gardens shut down both lanes of Ocean Highway (Highway 17) in Murrells Inlet late Saturday afternoon. Crews from both Georgetown County Emergency Management and Midway Fire Rescue were called to the scene. Some injuries were reported, but no specific details were available. The SC Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, that involved vehicles from both the northbound and southbound lanes of traffic. (WMBF)
- With rapid growth, will Murrells Inlet survive global warming? Popular for the famous Marshwalk, and known as South Carolina's seafood capital, Murrells Inlet is thriving. As with the rest of the Grand Strand, home building and increased growth are noticeable. But experts at the NOAA say area marshes are being overwhelmed by the rise of sea levels, and there is scant undeveloped land for the marsh to sustain itself over the next couple of decades. (The State)
- Construction begins today on the Conway Bypass bridge deck (eastbound) over US 501. The road surface facelift will take a couple of weeks and is expected to be completed by November 8th. Crews are using hydrodemolition, which is a way to remove concrete using high-pressure water. The road surface will be less rough once completed. Some road closures will happen during the process, including parts of Highways 22 and 319. (WPDE)
- Blue Star Mothers of South Carolina is seeking donations for its annual 'Wreaths Across America' program that honors fallen veterans. The organization was affected by the pandemic for 2020's annual fundraiser, and did not raise the money it had needed last year. The funds are used to put wreaths on veterans' graves in coastal Carolina cemeteries. With each wreath placed, a photo is taken and later sent to the family of the fallen soldier. (WBTW)
- Myrtle Beach hosted a record-breaking walk promoting suicide prevention. The Out of the Darkness Walk fundraiser brought in $50K towards the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The event was the single largest suicide awareness walk ever to be held in South Carolina. Approximately 350 walkers participated in the event. (WMBF)

About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
