Here are the top five stories today in Myrtle Beach:
- Crews had to manually operate the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel to free trapped riders on Sunday. The SkyWheel reopened Monday afternoon. The incident on Sunday was attributed to a "technical issue." The passengers were safe, the gondolas they were inside of are air-conditioned, plus they were in constant communication with rescuers. It is not clear how long the three groups of passengers were trapped on the ride. (WBTW)
- Myrtle Beach police arrested a man for impersonating an officer Monday morning on the 100 block of Oak Street. The man was arrested after claiming to be a Richland County deputy working on an off-duty assignment in Myrtle Beach. The man asked if he could borrow equipment from the police department. Staff checked with Richland County Sheriff's Department and determined that the man was not an employee of that department. He is also not certified through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Impersonating an officer can result in a fine of $500 and up to one year in prison. (WMBF)
- MBPD is looking for a missing woman who has medical issues that affect her speech and she may be confused. According to a social media post, Darlene Gist, 58, was seen Monday morning on Wedgewood Street in the city. She was last seen wearing a white hat, blue and white tie-dyed shirt and multicolor stretch pants. Anyone with info should call (843) 918-1382. (WBTW)
- Horry County Animal Care Center resumed normal operations on Monday as expected. The facility had a brief closure to the public while it assisted law enforcement with another animal investigation. This is the third time the shelter has temporarily closed to the public this month due to seizures of large numbers of animals with medical needs. Adoptable dogs that were already being housed at the shelter have once again been transferred to Tamroc Kennels, a nearby kennel that has assisted HCACC in an ongoing partnership. Cats and farm animals are available for no-fee adoption at HCACC on Industrial Park Road. The dogs at Tamroc are also available fee-free. (WMBF)
- The city of Myrtle Beach and other local beachside communities may be considering changes to shade device regulations after a Surfside Beach woman was killed by an umbrella in Garden City. Beach umbrellas can be dangerous and deadly, experts say. Statistics outlined in this article by My Horry News point to an alarming number of injuries and deaths caused by beach umbrellas caught by the wind, turning them into projectiles. What's being done to make beaches safer? Officials in local beach communities have a lot of research to do to determine the best kind of shading devices to be used on the beach. After info is gathered, they still have to meet and vote on changes, then have the various city councils pass the new rules. We are sure to hear more about this issue by next spring. (Myhorrynews)
Myrtle Beach pic of the day:
Reader Terri Olson and I agree — no two sunrises on the Grand Strand are the same! Terri sent in this photo last week and says these colors were wild. You've got that right, Terri! Thanks for the incredible pic.

- Day 1 of canine Emilia's trip to California had her RVing through South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Emilia has lots of toys to keep her occupied and she even gets to sleep in a human bed in the RV. It's so much better than the kennel she slept in for eight months! She and her human handlers stayed overnight at an RV park and she got to walk around and check out the nearby lakefront. She's getting lots of belly rubs and love as the group embarks on Day 2 of their trip. Stay tuned! (Kind Keeper Animal Rescue via Facebook)
- News from the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach: Today's featured #PetOfTheDay is Wendy! Her adoption fee is being sponsored today by Bully's Pub. Wendy is a perky and fun gal! This energetic pup is playful and silly. She enjoys cuddling and binge-watching TV shows. (The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach via Facebook) Help HSNMB clear the shelter! Now through Wednesday, August 31, adoption fees will be waived for Clear the Shelters! Check out all of HSNMB's available dogs and cats waiting to be adopted at: https://humanesocietynmb.org/adopt/. - Borgata of Surfside Beach raised funds for employees of Neal and Pam's on Sunday. The funds raised during the day-long benefit will go directly to the employees of the popular bar and grill. (WBTW)
- The very first Hindu temple in Myrtle Beach opened its doors on Sunday. The temple is located in Market Common and will be a place of worship for more than 250 local Hindu families. For about a decade, the Hindu community has been worshipping at various temporary locations, but the community is growing and it was finally decided to find a permanent place of worship. (Myhorrynews)
- Summer is winding down slowly, but Myrtle Beach area employers have tons of job openings. Interested in earning a little more cash, getting back into the workforce, or just need a change? Check out the latest job openings in and around the Grand Strand, courtesy of Patch and ZipRecruiter. (Myrtle Beach Patch)
- Retired St. James High School principal, Vann Pannell, took a job at Chick-fil-A to fill a void. The Murrells Inlet location's newest employee says his new job is a dream. He gets to be around people, young people especially, and feels like he has a purpose. The job is totally different from his experience as a high school principal, and that's just fine with Vann! About me: The best decision I ever made was relocating to the Myrtle Beach area from New England a few years ago, with my three dogs and three cats. I enjoy dogs, cats, road trips, photography, writing, vegetarian food, live music, bicycling and above all my daily walks on the beaches in and around the Grand Strand.
